Subject: [itfc] 7 defeats in a row - a lesson from history
While there's no reason at all to believe this side is doomed, losing
7 matches in a row is a rare thing in the Championship, and those of a
nervous disposition might want to look away now, because here are the
last four occasions on which it happened:
2009-2010 Plymouth (7 games lost in a row; final position 23rd and
relegated; following season relegated again to League Two)
2006-2007 Luton (7 games lost in a row; final position 23rd and
relegated; following season relegated again to League Two)
2004-2005 Gillingham (7 games lost in a row; final position 22nd and
relegated; made no impact for two seasons in League One before being
relegated again to League Two)
2003-2004 Wimbledon (7 games lost in a row; final position 24th and
relegated; made no impact for a season in League One before being
relegated again to League Two, as MK Dons)
Now of course you'll probably spot that in three of those cases, the
club was imploding off the field, which might explain what happened,
rather than simply saying that losing 7 matches in a row itself
appears a symptom of terminal decline; but on the other hand, it could
also be said that normally it's only clubs which are falling to pieces
which have runs like this ...so what excuse is there for teams like
Ipswich?
