WATA was founded in the year 2004 by Amer Al-Azem, an ambitious expert. He had dreamt to integrate all academics, translators, intellectuals, and students who deal with Arabic translation, from all over the globe, into one association. Since its creation, WATA has attracted members from all over the world, though over 3000 members have joined it. WATA has become the only global association that represents the Arab World in UNESCO.
WATA is a legal organization with international repute and presence, registered in Belgium and administered in Qatar; WATA has many experienced, well-qualified, highly educated and specialized linguists, translators and professors of Translation, covering all aspects of knowledge.
One of our main functions is to instruct members in new developments in the field of translation and interpreting; this we do by means of training sessions, and translation and interpreting online courses. Such courses, about four each year, can cover any subject relevant to translation and interpreting profession, such as legal translation and interpreting, translation and interpreting theory, writing skills, and contrastive analysis…etc. Translation and interpreting, and linguistics matters are discussed consciously throughout WATA's forums. The forums are supervised by academic experts.
WATA has held its first global conference in Amman- Jordan, in July 2005. And one of its future plans is to set up a global translation and interpreting academy.
An online journal, with an editorial board of 45 academics, scholars, linguists, translators, writers, intellectuals and professors, carrying academic articles and researches, written by WATA's members who are university staff, has been published. The first issue has been launched in August 2005.
