New issue 1481 by frodola...@gmail.com: Webkit instance inside iterm2
http://code.google.com/p/iterm2/issues/detail?id=1481

Hi,

This idea will probably never see the light, but I was thinking about how
cool it would be if next to a terminal, you could open some kind of
embedded webkit instance in the same window. Just like split, but something
like "add browser". I think It would be very useful for web developers. For
example developing for rubyonrails: You can just run iterm fullscreen with
vim, rails server, rails console and a webkit instance. At this point item2
will be a very powerful, fast and light kind of "IDE".

Now if you guys decide on this, don't forget the debugger :-)

Kind Regards,

Frodo Larik

I second this feature. with my new job, I have started doing RoR
development and I love to use it in fullscreen mode with VIM and tmux
running other console apps. If I could just get the browser, I dont have to
switch apps and everything will be in a flow.

This would be so awesome! Having a pane with webkit woud totally ease my
development flow.

Well, it's duct taped in there, but it works:

Fork is here if people want to play:

Don't judge the awful implementation, just wanted to see if I could (with
very little objc experience)

Wow, that's actually way cooler than I had imagined. I'll tag this for v3
but just as an exploration. I really, really don't want to maintain a web
browser.

While I'm thinking about it, I'd suggest CEF
(https://code.google.com/p/chromiumembedded) rather than the Cocoa WebView
as it opens up interesting logging/debugging opportunities for developers
(you can talk to the debugging tools over web sockets). I'll keep the issue
updated with any further experiments.

This is a really good idea. Thumbs up on the alpha, ninja. chromiumembed
is also smart.

gnach, totally understand someone setting out to build a terminal emulator
to not want to find themselves maintaining a browser :D One idea though
might be to treat it more like a more general plugin architecture for
introducing new panes that someone like ninja could use to create a browser
pane... or someone could create a text editor pane, etc.

I already tried this approach using Window's ConEmu (it allows to embed
virtually any GUI process into pane) and it's AWESOME. I'll be really happy
to see this in iTerm2
