New issue 1790 by hughes.m...@gmail.com: Provide toggle to turn on/off line
wrapping
http://code.google.com/p/iterm2/issues/detail?id=1790

Looks like a conversation was had in the Google Groups about this but no
one ever actually filed a feature request.

In general I don't like having horizontal scrollbars and prefer to have the
lines wrap, but there are occasions...such as looking at long stack traces,
that I'd rather just have sequentially indented lines line up and just be
forced to scroll to the right to expose all the details. To accomplish
this task now, I end up making the text incredibly small so I can read
stack traces lined up, but even that doesn't always work.

I would like to occasionally turn off line wrapping, esp. for debugging
code where I print messages and don't want to worry about formatting. A
workaround is to pipe the output to a file, but this is often not
convenient.

+1 Occasional horizontal scrolling is very handy when grepping logs

Just starred this. An interim solution is to pipe to a line-trucating
utility:

eg: tail -f file_with_long_lines.txt | w

# truncate STDIN to console width
w() {
x=${COLUMNS-150}
x=${1-$x} # can specify width if desired...
[ $x -gt 255 ] && x=255 # never more than 255 b/c sed gets pissy
let x=$x-1 # subtract one to prevent line-wrap, of course...
sed -e "s~ ~ ~g" -e "s~^\(.\{$x\}\).*$~\1~" # the first re replaces tabs
with spaces

Like said before; this would be great for log viewing/following with for
example "tail -f"

Also useful for compiling. Command lines can be 100s to 1000s of
characters long; it's considerably easier to see warnings/errors if lines
do not wrap. Emacs shell is a workaround but iterm2 support is certainly
desired.

The default of horizontal scrolling is just horrible. I need to see the
entire command, especially for copy/paste.

Most useful for me for server and git log files (like diffs). Lack of this
feature is possibly the biggest deal breaker for me.

Yes please add this feature, if only for the viewing of logs it would be
very handy indeed.

This would be an enormous amount of work. If you pipe your output through
less -S, it will do this for you.
