Iterm2 windows dying on startup.

Getting a message

Session "shell" in tab #1 just terminated.

how do I debug this?

Check Prefs > Profiles > General and make sure the command is set to login shell. If it's not, then specify the full path to the command.

I tried that, but it is set to login shell. What else can I do to check for the root issue?

If the session is closing immediately after opening, there may be an error message you aren't seeing. Turn off Prefs>Profiles>Session>Automatically close a session when it ends. Then you'll be able to see the error message.
