Hi everyone,

I've been having issues with esc key on fresh install of iTerm2 on Macbook pro M1 pro max.

Symptom #1
Steps to reproduce:
  1. open iTerm2, build 3.4.14 on macOS 12.1
  2. go to any other program (e.g. Chrome).
  3. Press "esc" key on keyboard
What happens: Focus changes back to iTerm2, as if this was a hotkey
Expected behavior : Esc key shouldn't act as a hotkey to iTerm2

Symptom #2
Steps to reproduce:
  1. open iTerm2, build 3.4.14 on macOS 12.1
  2. enter vim
  3. Press "esc" key on keyboard
What happens: Nothing happens. I have to use ctrl+[ to activate vim's normal esc key behaviour
Expected behavior: Esc key should activate vim's : command line.

What I already checked
Preferences - Keys: No esc key binding found

Check Prefs > Profiles > Keys to see if you have a profile with a hotkey of esc assigned to it.

I’m not quite sure what else it could be. Can you make a debug log that reproduces the issue?

Yes, thank you.

here it is attached.

My steps to take the debug log:

1. switch to the iTerm window
2. enable debug logging
3. switch to Chrome
4. press ESC button. At this point, pressing the Esc button switched me back to iTerm window.
5. turn off debug logging

thank you!!

I am getting this exact behaviour. Happens anywhere in MAC -> I press Escape and ITERM2 takes focus.
Started with Monterey Update in my case and I am on the latest version of ITERM2
