Lately I've been thinking it would be nice to have multiple tabs per pane, like Editor Groups in VSCode.

For example, you could have multiple man pages in different tabs in the right pane, and execute commands in the left pane.

Or you could have an editor in the left pane, and run tests or start a local server in the right pane.

This would take a lot of effort to implement, so it's not a serious feature request, just a thought.

You could achieve something similar by using two windows side by side, but I think it's easier to split the panes than to arrange the windows.

That is an interesting idea. I think I would implement it by:

  1. Define a group of sessions
  2. Bury all but one
  3. When switching “inner tabs” swap a buried pane with a visible one

To manage groups of sessions there would likely need to be an inner tab bar.

I’d say it’s doable but it is a big project because of the amount of new UI and updating of existing features to make it a first-class citizen: The inner tab bar UI, navigation shortcuts to switch inner tabs, exposing it to the Python API, actions, key bindings, mouse pointer actions, probably a status bar component, etc.

File an issue and I’ll try to come back to it when I have more time.
