Key mappings and CSI u

I want to be able to differentiate between <backspace> and <control-backspace> outside applications that support CSI u encoding, but want to use just CSI u modifier encoding when applications support it.

Unfortunately, when I bind <control-backspace> to ^H and enable CSI u, I still get ^H even inside applications that support CSI u.

Is there any way to work around this?
