How do I get a hash symbol in iterm2 with a UK keyboard? Normally it's
Alt+3, but in iterm2 it doesn't work, and I can't find any mention of
this problem anywhere on the internet.

For now I think you need to add a keymapping in prefs->profiles->keys.
I'm trying to get my hands on a non-US keyboard so I can fiddle with
this, but no luck yet. If anyone lives around San Jose and have a
keyboard you're willing to donate to the cause, please let me know!

If it's a keyboard issue it has to be specific to the UK one, since it works fine on my Swedish keyboard, even if I change input layout to British.
Frankly, to me it sounds more like a charset issue. Is there something shown when you press the key or is it ignored completely?

I have a UK keyboard. With Input Source set to British, alt-3 is producing '#' in iterm2 (and shift-3 produces £). With it set to USA, that is reversed.

However alt-3 is problematic in emacs and I leave it set to USA constantly now; I haven't notice any downsides to that yet (all other keys seem to produce what is written on the key). I suggest messing around with the Input Source settings (Preferences -> Languages & Text).

After a bit of digging, it seems the right and left alt buttons were set to do different things. I hadn't realised that was possible before. Right-alt + 3 gave me a hash. In the keyboard prefs I have switched over the assignment of the right and left alt buttons and everything is as is expected again.

Cheers,
Mark
