TL;DR: Is there a way I can open an URL with CMD+Click in new iTerm browser tab? I don't want to change default browser though.

Background:
I spend almost 25-35% of my time on iTerm.
I use safari for all official work and firefox for reset of the stuff.

I would like to switch from firefox to iTerm's browser to save time moving between spaces.
I would not want to change default browser from Safari.

As iTerm provides way to open, it can may be intercept the request and open its own browser.

If you cmd-click a URL it ought to show an alert offering to use iTerm2’s browser:

This will be shown as long as you haven’t disabled browser-style profiles in advanced settings. If you don’t have the browser plugin installed, you’ll first by prompted to download it.

Hello @George,

I added the plugin when I started this discussion. It never showed me the above prompt. I added the browser profile and also a shortcut key to open browser in new tab.
I used the iterm browser for a couple days and then deleted it as it was not freeing up the memory even after closing the tab.

And then after 2-3 days, it somehow started showing the above prompt (I updated the iTerm version I guess).
Even now, I Cmd+Clicked a link and it showed the prompt. I downloaded the plugin using it. But after installing the plugin, now it does NOT show it.

Starting fresh now:
I installed browser plugin.
Browser profile created.
"Enable browser-style profile" show "Yes" in Advance Settings.
Restarted iTerm.
Cmd+Click a link and it opens in Safari :(

Just figured out the issue while opening a PR.
URL starting with "https" shows the popup but not the one starting with "http".

Try doing:

defaults delete com.googlecode.iterm2 NoSyncOpenLinksInAppForFileURL
defaults delete com.googlecode.iterm2 NoSyncOpenLinksInApp

That should reset the prompts. The memory leak will be fixed in the next version, out very soon.

Those defaults didn't help.

$ defaults delete com.googlecode.iterm2 NoSyncOpenLinksInAppForFileURL
2025-10-03 15:05:55.706 defaults[36064:2175660]
Domain (com.googlecode.iterm2) not found.
Defaults have not been changed.
