Hi,

I noticed that tab dragging has some visual enhancements in modern applications, that iTerm2 stands to benefit from adopting.

While rearranging tabs within the application windows, modern applications like Web browsers often create a breakable, but stiff vertical barrier, as if the tab being dragged is on rails. This looks aestheticaly nice, and helps users to manage any difficulty with cursor movement.

While rearranging tabs outside of an application window, then a preview of the rest of the tab accompanies the tab title bar. It reminds the user that releasing the tab outside of the current window, will spawn a new window.

Could there be an option for more idiomadic tab dragging UX?

Unfortunately the built-in tab bar in macOS is too limited to be of much use. I’ve made some improvements:

  • Commit 2a83b440d3e5b728af9917b007e3817ac6b049aa locks drags to be “on rails” as you mentioned
  • Commit 9a02f1cc020f683688c97dcd2590266356b57e86 improves animation performance, which has always been abysmal, to hit around 40 fps
  • Commits 94be5f1881ee9c2cd1609b118eebb6ff38d63368 and 8877df49cc609953205ceb4895ba1cddf2990d40 fix various glitches in the animations

When rearranging tabs outside an app window, you should get a preview of the rest of the tab. You don’t?
