Copy paste brackets pasted selection with escape sequences

Selection text, then CMD-C copying, followed by CMD-V pasting pastes the selection bracketed by what look like attempted color sequences which show up as ~00 at the beginning and ~01 at the end.

What's going on, and how do I fix it?

It's actually 00~ and 01~.

This is paste bracketing. It can be left on because an app crashed or an ssh session ended. You can turn it off by resetting the terminal (cmd-R) or by turning off “paste bracketing” in session > terminal state. If you install shell integration, this situation can be discovered and remediated automatically.
