**Driving the Green Recovery and Redesign: Embedding Local Climate Action at the Heart of Economic Stimulus Packages**

Led by the Ministry of the Environment Japan, supported by the UNFCCC, and managed by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), the Redesign2020 Platform was launched on 3 September 2020 through a high level virtual event that gathered 50+ ministers across the world.

The Platform for Redesign 2020 is an initiative to enhance international solidarity in addressing two crises at the same time: climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The session includes a special Address on “Redesign” by H.E. Koizumi Shinjiro, Minister of Environment of Japan, remarks from Patricia Espinosa, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, and talks by Prof. Takeuchi Kazuhiko, Chair of the Central Environmental Council, Government of Japan and President of IGES, David Dodman, Director, Human Settlements, International Institute for Environment and Development; Author of 6th Assessment Synthesis Report (AR6) of the IPCC. It will be followed by a leaders roundtable, with Emilia Saiz, Secretary General, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) as moderator; and panelists Hayashi Fumiko, Mayor, City of Yokohama, Japan; Kwon Min, Director General, Seoul Metropolitan Government, Republic of Korea; Mohamed Sefiani, Mayor, Chefchaouen, Morocco; Tunc Soyer, Mayor, Izmir Metropolitan Government, Turkey; Abigail Binay, Mayor, Makati City, Philippines; and Mahadi Che Ngah, Mayor, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

High-level representatives from local, regional and national governments, as well as from the business and finance sector, will discuss the challenges and opportunities for putting integrated climate action at the core of local economic stimulus packages for aiding the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the criticality of making financial resources available to those cities, towns and regions working to tackle the climate emergency.

We start with a high-level dialogue on localizing the green recovery and climate finance with Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, Director, Sustainable Development Unit, Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General; Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, CEO and Chairperson, GEF; Juan David Palacio, Director, Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area, Colombia; with additional talks by Peter Kurz, Mayor, City of Mannheim, Germany, Gerry Muscat, Head of Division, Urban Development, European Investment Bank, Barbara Buchner, Executive Director, Climate Policy Initiative; Secretariat of the Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance, Gregor Robertson, Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), and Andrea Fernández, Director of Climate Planning, Climate and Partnerships, C40 Cities.
