As world leaders descend on Delhi for the G20 summit, India's Narendra Modi is flexing.
The weight the prime minister places on the event is inescapable. Huge billboards displaying his face alongside motivational slogans are ubiquitous on roadsides across the capital - with some also serving to hide shanty towns from view.
A tight security protocol surrounds the event. The old town’s centre is in a state of near-lockdown with semi-deserted streets and closed shops replacing the usual bustle.
But the summit risks making history for the wrong reasons. With deep divides between major economies over the Russia-Ukraine conflict and climate action, failure to produce a joint declaration is a distinct possibility.
The climate fault lines are known: rich countries have been pushing for ambitious targets on renewable energy capacity and emissions peaking, while developing nations demand equivalent commitments to scaling up climate finance.
Energy and climate ministers found it impossible to reach agreement in July. Their bosses are now called upon to break the deadlock.
Mexico is one of only two G20 countries with no net zero target. Populist president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or AMLO, has prioritised "energy sovereignty", in the form of support for heavily indebted oil company Pemex, best known for setting the ocean on fire.
That could be about to change, as his governing party Morena this week named climate scientist Claudia Sheinbaum as its candidate for next year's presidential election. She'll face senator Xóchitl Gálvez, who also backs renewables.
Of course, scientific awareness is no guarantee of political effectiveness. The technocrat needs to hold onto AMLO's base to win and has avoided criticising his oil policies. Her record as mayor of Mexico City has its environmental critics.
But climate analysts are hopeful the next president will take the country in a greener direction.
Ahead of the G20, Indian businesses call for policies to enable a just clean energy transition. Leading Indian businesses and companies operating in India have written to G20 leaders with seven key policy asks.

Ed's note: Africa, the world’s carbon market playground
What do you know about the UN-endorsed African Carbon Market Initiative (ACMI)? Its unveiling took place at COP27 in 2022 with the promise of unlocking $6 billion in revenue and supporting 30 million jobs by 2030 - but through a questionable system that will allow polluters to continue polluting.
The concept of a carbon market provides a platform for companies and other carbon emitters to buy carbon credits. The money goes toward projects that avoid or reduce emissions, such as renewable energy projects or land and nature schemes that aim to capture carbon from the atmosphere.
As carbon markets are seemingly gaining popularity, concerns are being raised about whether this is a long-term solution to reducing and stopping emissions.
