According to their site, edjing claims to be the world's #1 DJ app. Would a free DJ app really allow DJs to blend together music professionally? I decided to give it a test spin. Here's what I discovered...

They say the best things in life are free, right? In the case of edjing 5, this may be true. As soon as I opened the app, I instantly liked the GUI; the two turntables reminded me of the good 'ol days of raves and DJing. edjing 5 is clearly laid out and it will be easy for DJs to learn how to load and play tracks in the app.

The most impressive feature in the settings is the ability to change the cross fader curves; DJs can choose from eight different curves. It's amazing to me this feature is so developed, especially considering edjing 5 is free.

The only thing edjing 5 is really missing is a headphone cue feature, so you can cue up your tracks. To me, this makes the app better suited for use for fun home or office parties, rather than professional situations. If you want to be able to preview tunes with headphones, you'll have to cough up the big bucks for the pro version of the app.

After giving this a test spin, I much prefer the edjing Pro to edjing 5. While the free version is a great starter app, edjing Pro has been carefully designed and includes important features like headphone cue, the trendy Freeze mode and an arsenal of creative 'color' effects.

There are two different layouts in edjing Pro; a spectral view and a turntable one. The spectral view shows the waveforms of each of the tracks and visually represents the track's frequencies with variations in color. The turntable view is really cute and fun to use; the decks can be used to do some basic baby scratching and nice to see the album artwork. In most situations, it's probably going to be more practical to use spectral view but the turntablists out there will appreciate edjing Pro's efforts to include a view just for them.

The spectral view layout is similar to the Traktor DJ app, with two decks available for mixing. Tracks can be easily loaded up from iTunes or streamed from SoundCloud. Across the top there's hot cues, loops and tempo adjust. The loop can be set anywhere from 1/32 all the way to 16 beats. Loops can be easily set by pressing the Loop Set button and Unset by using the same button and loop length can be set on the fly by using the plus and minus buttons. The tempo of the track can be adjusted using the pitch slider, which responds quickly to touch. The tempo adjust may throw some DJs off, as it is positioned horizontally (instead of vertically). There's also plus/minus buttons that allow you to gently nudge the track into place. Like edjing 5, edjing Pro includes a record function so DJs are able to record and share their sets.

The crossfader for the app is positioned horizontally, which is a little different than on most DJ mixers! With a little practise most DJs should be able to adapt to using this. edjing Pro features eight different cross fader curves, which is great as many other apps would choose to only include one or two cross fader curves. I was personally impressed to note the variety of curves available, even though the only curve I ever use is the Scratch Cut. (Note: these curves are also available in edjing 5 too)

One of the most fun features in edjing Pro is the effects! At the top of the effect are Roll and Roll Filter, which both sound good and are laid out in a square grid. Below the Rolls is the BT Grid, (I think this stands for beat grid) which turned out to be one of my favorite effects. It's a little similar to Traktor's Beatmasher 2 and has a good delay effect that's useful when you want to hear the sound of your snares repeating in different percussive patterns.

Lastly, there's the Color effects, which are standard effects like Filter, Reverb, Delay and Echo Out. Each effect can be turned on and off at the bottom, and the intensity of each effect is controlled by a volume slider. All the effects can be applied at once, and edjing Pro allows you to combine effects from the different FX sections together to build FX chains. I would have personally liked it if the FX section was laid out so that the roll and color effects could be accessed at the same time; eg. If the FX section had a horizontal layout rather than one where only one section can be visible at a time. The small rectangular layout of the effects make sense when they're opened up beside the EQs. The EQ section includes a three band EQ and volume fader for each channel. No complaints here, everything works well and the faders respond quickly to touch.

Not sure where to start? Edjing Pro includes a handful of short video tutorials that teach DJs how to use the fx, make loops, use the freeze function and more. I love the fact that these tutorials can be accessed from right inside the app. They're all about 30 seconds long and allow DJs to learn to use the features quickly and easily. Nice work here edjing!

Overall, edjing Pro is a great app that can be used by both professional and beginner DJs. It has a good layout and that allows DJs to mix together two tracks, loop and add some cool sounding FX. For $7.99, this app is a great deal and gives DJs the ability to spin tracks from their iPad. The question is, are you brave enough to venture into the futuristic world of iPad Djing?

With the most extensive music library in the world of DJ apps, edjing Mix offers unlimited creative freedom and lets users switch between their own mp3 and streaming sources like Deezer or SoundCloud.

The edjing Mix music library optimizes time at a maximum. With the possibility to sort tracks by BPM, alphabetical order or length, people can easily find the song that meets their needs. Not to mention the global search that enables users to get a detailed results list sorted by music catalogues, or the current queue to manage and organize DJ sets.

At the heart of edjing Mix's design is the willingness to offer the most realistic mixing experience possible. Not just for the experience itself, but also to make its manipulation easier, for beginners and pro DJs alike. The new realistic interface has been thought to be the most efficient possible with a direct and quick access to all essential features to gain time during live sessions.

With the introduction of the Smart Volume, edjing Mix confirms its will to optimize the mixing experience. This new feature automatically detects the volume and the gain of the two tracks playing to adjust the gap if needed, and avoid saturated sound.

Thanks to the CAE technology, edjing Mix calculates the BPM of each track with an extreme precision that leads to a better beat's position. This technology enables you to get an improved sound rendering and to fully enjoy the structuring and the rhythmic effects.

In this way, in addition to MIDI controllers, users can connect through two vinyl turntables. edjing Mix can be used with both timecoded and audio vinyls and allows to use all edjing features like applying FX and recording.

edjing Mix is also compatible with Mixfader, the first bluetooth crossfader, launched by DJiT a few months ago. Connected via Bluetooth 4.0 to Mixfader, edjing Mix becomes your vinyl record while Mixfader keeps the crossfader role.

edjing Scratch reproduces the behaviour and sound rendering of physical vinyl scratching with extreme precision and reactivity, thus reinventing turntables, making them digital and mobile. A technical prowess made possible through CAE - Core Audio Engine - a proprietary technology, result of 5 years of R&D.

At the heart of edjing Scratch performance, the Core Audio Engine technology - or CAE - offers for the first time a reliable and high-quality scratching experience on smartphones and tablets. This technology enables, for example, the reproduction of the vinyl inertia and its sound rendering making edjing Scratch amazingly realistic.

edjing Scratch includes the most advanced and complete music library that you can find on DJ app. Access millions of songs, easily find your favorite tracks and enjoy free DJ content, like sample pack or instrumental tracks.

From now on, the store gives acces to 21 sample packs, including one for free. Each one of them contains 16 sound samples and the store will be regularly supplied with new ones. Various musical styles are represented: EDM, dubstep, house, trap, and way more! edjing Mix enrichs the user experience and makes it even better.

edjing lets you mix music stored on your Android device as well as music available for streaming from Deezer and SoundCloud. Pay attention to data usage if you choose the second option and you're not connected via WiFi. Adding songs is done using the two buttons beside the turntables or by directly clicking the turntable graphics.

Those who want full control over their mixes have a wide range of features and effects at their disposal: scratch, flanger, echo, loop, pitch, equalizer, cue points, etc. edjing also offers additional effects (reverse, double flipping, auto scratch and more) that you can buy through in-app purchase.

edjing is easy to use, particularly if you've already used mixing software or another mixer app, or even if you're a mixing newbie. It's easy to add songs, all of the features are at your fingertips, and it only takes a few seconds to get the hang of it.

edjing is a great mixing app for Android devices. The ability to mix music from Deezer and SoundCloud along with the sleek user interface are the standout features. Music-lovers take note!

With the edjing Pro app, you can mix and remix songs, and make your own music in a fun and creative way. You can mix songs together, split them into different remix tracks, and add effects to each of them.
