I have recently come back to work and have been given a new computer and so had to install creative cloud etc. When I use Photoshop and try to use shift+F5 and shift+F6 (fill and feather) nothing happens.

I have read through the forums and checked my keyboard shortcuts in photoshop and both are correct, I have also deleted the default commands from actions as I read somewhere this can affect it. Restarted and still having the same issue. The shift key on the keyboard works fine for typing etc so I know it's not a keyboard issue either.

The way to test this is to also hold down the Fn key while pressing the shortcut. For example, if Shift+F5 does not open Edit > Fill, but it does when you also hold down the Fn key, then that is the problem.

As I was reading through this old but recently revived thread, I was about to start a post about changing the usage of the function keys to Standard Use, then I got to the end and saw that @Conrad C had already explained it perfectly. It's something I do on the first day with the setup of every new Mac.

In addition, I had to purchase a Windows laptop and found it also applies there. The difference is that on Macs, it's part of macOS and is always in the same place. On a Windows laptop, it is NOT part of the OS. Instead it's part of the computer and is different for each vendor and you have to look it up for your model. The concept is the same.

I have a basic PS qustion here. Is there any way that I can disable connecting brush stroke after drawing a straight line, while holding the Shift key. Currently, when I draw a straight line with shift and attempt to do a nother straight line, it connects with the previous straight line.

Mine still does this even after I let go of shift and press it again. I have to let go for a couple seconds, which doesn't seem like a lot but it messes up my flow. Since I like drawing fast, continuing straight lines I use the shift key, but then I have to go erase all the diagonal connection points afterwords. Is there anything I can do to disable the feature?

So many people have asked for this feature before, I do not think Adobe will do this unfortunately, it would be an incredible feature. I've been using Photoshop since the early 1990s and would love to see this. Having the shift key draw a straight brush stroke AND connect brush strokes is ridiculous. There should at minumum be a way to toggle the feature on or off. Or provide another key binding for each separately, which has not happened yet. If you draw alot of straight lines, having to constantly unpress the shift key between lines just to prevent your lines from connecting is not a good feature imho and slows down productivity.

Was there ever any update on this. It's 4 years now and I too am looking for a way to disable it. It's a feature that makes concepting/rough drawings a pain, when all the lines are linking together. Drawing hundreds of chicken scratches and holding and clicking shift, release, click, hold...it's insane.

I have been using Adobe products for over 5 years now and all the products use the shift function to scale items, smart objects, and other things proportionally. Why did Adobe change this property on Photoshop items to do the opposite of this now? There are still some things in Photoshop that you have to still hold shift in for now too making things very confusing for me.

Especially going between Illustrator and Photoshop a lot. Was their user testing that happened for this feature change that showed a lot of people would like it done at Adobe or during beta phases of the application?

Hi, In my opinion mostly people that are beginner to use Photoshop they normal try to scale their things without holding shift. So when they do they didn't get their things proportionally transformed. So I think that's why Adobe make it easier. But it is lil bit confusing for old user.

...and just to let off some steam - Why would a popular app change a function that EVERY professional graphics artist has used and grown accustomed to since I can remember just to possibly accommodate some new users? IDIOCY of the highest magnitude. I hope whomever is responsible gets a pay cut.

It's all a question of personal preferences of course but although I am a very long Photohop user (more than 20 years) I really like this new behavior very much. After all, almost always I need to transform things in proportion.

Utterly frustrated. I agree that's probably why they did it, and probably for the folks that will be running Photoshop on an iPad Pro or other touchscreen device. I get that, but it should have been an easy on/off check box in preferences so the rest of us who aren't newbies don't get screwed up and have to dig around for a fix. I am constantly using free transform with the modifier keys, so changing the shift key modifier behavior to mean constrain messes all those key combinations too, and really screws up muscle memory. Add to it the problem that automatic constrained proportions is not a consistent behavior among all tools and certainly not all Adobe programs, which makes trying to relearn even more difficult jumping between programs. I've tried for months and just can't do it--too much of a productivity killer. I'm making the prefs edit and silently screaming in my head.

But that's not the case here because most things don't work like this. In fact, Illustrator is probably better here. Hold shift while using a corner keeps aspect. Hold it while using an edge does something else. I can't remember what, but it's useful. lol

And Photoshop is NOT for beginners! To the teacher's post, they are explaining, this is a Very easy thing to learn. And it's not even Necessary to learn the hotkey. Photoshop Elements is for beginners. If you can't figure out a hotkey, you probably aren't the type to use them in the first place....so use the button up top that locks the aspect ratio.

This should be one of those things that as soon as you change it from locked/unlocked it changes your preference. Having to change xml files, or dig Anywhere into program files is just terrible programmers. It's like they've never had a meeting with someone involved in user experience before. Get some decent user experience people Adobe, Please. Really the only major complaint I have about your software as a whole is poor decisions regarding UX. Crashes here and there? Yeah, programmers make mistakes, most likely because of the crazy number of variables for all the systems they have to support. That's expected. But you CAN control how things are designed as far as things like this.

When I try to select multiple layers in the layers panel to merge them using the SHIFT key, SHIFT doesn't work so I can't select more than one layer at a time. Other keys are responsive and working. Shift works when making capital letters using the text tool. Any help on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!!! All the info I see online regarding shift is about the proportion change, which isn't my concern at the moment.

Hi, thank you for your reply. It's only happening with the wacom pen. Everything works normal when I use a mouse, so I thiink it might be a problem with the pen settings, but its function is normal click and the driver is up to date.

Has this been solved? I just upgraded to Mojave 14 and then updated all Wacom drivers for a CTE-480. I even removed ALL traces of Wacom installs, prefs, in the system and personal library and reinstalled. I then stepped backwards in the update by 1 version. I had updated to the latest CC versions of PSD and AI and now I cannot select multiple items, layers or anything holding the shift down in Illustrator or Photoshop. I can use my mouse and I can use my finger on the Wacom Pen&touch but not if I use the pen to select the items. The option key is not working either, it defaults to the selection tool but will not duplicate.
I use the pen for intricate multiple line drawings and it's a pain to stop, holster the pen then use finger or grab the mouse and select then go back to the pen for drawing. Not efficient. Thank you

Hi, I think I have found a semi-solution: I have installed English keyboard, just to use it with PS and it helped. With my native, Polish keyboard it still doesn't see the SHIFT key, so I have to switch it every time. Bit annoying, but at least I can write actions

Hi! Have you managed to solve the issue? I have it now with Photoshop '24 and Sonoma 14. I tried to reinstall the drivers 5 times. It seems like the tablet disregards any key button while the pen is in use. Cannot also transform a layer with shift or cmd buttons for example. =(

I am also running into BOTH problems. Transform tool not allowing freeform transform when holding down shift and the Shift button to select multiple layers/objects. I can tell you, there is a setting un Preferences > general > click/check legacy transform option. I haven't restarted photoshop yet, but I am hoping that works. Why would Adobe make these changes?? People have been used to those short-keys for 10+ years...

i had a similar problem, i went around it by bringing up the wacom pen's keyboard, clicked shift there instead of my fisical kyeboard, and i was able to fine an alternative solution, but still I wasnt able to solve the problem.

HAD THE SAME PROBEM.... JUST RESOLVED! On my I MAC just finished a reinstall, checking out photo realized my shift and option keys were not working with Intous pen but were with my mouse. SYSTEM PREFERENCES/ KEYBOARD/ Check the box... Use F1, F2
