Ho bisogno di chiedere qualcosa

Ho imparato prima che e' giusto dire "ho abitato in Umbria da due
anni." (I lived in Umbria for 2 years)... dopo leggendo in piu' (after
reading more) cominicio credere che e' piu giusto dire - abitavo in
Umbria (perche' e' 4 anni fa adesso... non e' diece mese -
sfortunatamente...)
Sto leggendo un dizionario dei verbi... I tensi me eludono... ma
studiaro' piu.
Vorrei te dire che il mio grupo qui migliorano consistamente... non
siamo fluente ma la nostra confidenza cresce sempre.

I lived in Umbertide for 3 years
Ho vissuto/Vissi ad Ubertide per 3 anni (use "vissi" only if you lived
there a very long time ago, e.g. 10 or more years ago)
I have been living in Umbertide for three years/since last summer
Vivo ad Umbertide da 3 anni / dalla scorsa estate
When yo use the present perfect progressive, or in substitution the
present perfect where the -ing form is not allowed (for instance I've
loved him for years) + "for" or "since", you must use the present
tense in Italian. When the present perfect progressinv is neither
followed by "for /since " or expression such as "all day, all night...
etc", you can often translate it with "impefetto" tense
I've been waiting...

On the other hand, when the present perfect progressive is followed by
"all day, all night etc", you can traslate it with "passato prossimo"
I've been studying all day
Ho studiato tutto il giorno
She's been dancing all night
Lei ha ballato tutta la notte
I had been living in Umbertide for three years, when my dog died
Vivevo ad Umbertide da tre anni, quando il mio cane morì.
In most cases as above, past perfect progressive is translated in
Italian with "imperfetto" tense
