Meet the Makers: Satya Kraus

Since the first moment Satya Kraus saw a motorcycle as a child, he has been obsessed. He turned that obsession into Kraus Motor Co. and now builds intricate handmade machines in his workshop under the California redwoods.

Kraus Motor Co. will be at Maker Faire Bay Area, May 21 & 22, where you can meet him, run your hands along the fenders, and marvel at the complexity of his powerful bikes.

"Each Maker Faire event unites the best of the science, engineering and DIY communities, bringing together a range of people who have helped in the progression of the 'Maker Movement',” said Kevin Yapp, Chief Marketing Officer, element14. "element14’s involvement and support of this year’s Maker Faire Bay Area parallels its ongoing commitment to enable electronics enthusiasts to share the insight and knowledge that helps inspire the innovative gadgets and technologies created by makers and hackers in garages, basements and communities across the nation."

element14 hopes to engage, interact and collaborate with fellow makers through a variety of DIY activities, informative events and in-booth demos at Maker Faire, including an exclusive 3D printer project from modding sensation Benjamin Heckendorn, a speaking panel covering the future of education with electronics heavyweights Jeri Ellsworth and Mitch Altman, and the culmination of a three-month “Great Global Hackerspace Challenge” focused on advancing education. It should be a fun-filled, action-packed show.

HOMEGROWN Village

Everyone eats. Our food makes a journey from far or near, and brings with it a story. The HOMEGROWN Village at Maker Faire Bay Area is an opportunity to know that story. From the bees that pollinate crops, to the farmers who harvest them; the tilling a few square feet of city soil for an urban farm to growing vertically with your veggies; and the roast of your morning coffee beans to the art of noodle-making -- the makers, presentations and hands-on workshops you’ll find in the HOMEGROWN Village offer something for anyone with an appetite for DIY and good food.

Health 2.0 Pavilion at Maker Faire

Health 2.0 will host a curated agenda of speakers, presentations, technology demos and sponsored project areas at Maker Faire Bay Area. The Health 2.0 Pavilion will bring together members of the Health 2.0 Conferences and the Maker community for the first time.

Health 2.0’s original tag line of ‘User-Generated Healthcare’ contains the germ of a compelling idea—patients are using new tools to guide their own care. And now those tools are starting to integrate with the health care system. Doctors, patients, and health care organizations are all starting to use a new generation of online and mobile technologies which are fundamentally changing the way health care works. Health 2.0 prides itself on being the leading showcase of cutting-edge technologies in health care, including online Communities, Search, and lightweight Tools for consumers to manage their health and connect to providers online.

Health 2.0 has become THE place to see and be seen for the leaders in health care technology.

Maker Faire adds New Attractions in 2011 and welcomes back some Festival Favorites!!

New this year is the solar powered people mover; a robotic ball, the Sphero, that you control from your smartphone; the De-Car, or Driverless Errand Car, destined to pick up groceries of the future; and socialbotics, DIY robots you control from your facebook page. Towering above it all is artist Zachary Coffin’s aptly named "Colossus," a 70-foot-tall moving sculpture composed of stone and steel and only ever before seen at Burning Man. These are just a few of the NEW and amazing things you will discover and interact with over the weekend. We are pleased to have many of our favorite Maker Faire attractions back to entertain, educate and delight you; Coke Zero and Mentos fountains from eepybird.com, the Life Size Moustrap, the Electric Giraffe, a quick moving Land Shark, ArcAttack and SO many more!

We can’t wait for you to explore and experience all that is Maker Faire! Come be inspired! And thanks for your continued support!

Best,

The Maker Faire Team
