Gillian Anderson has signed on for a ninth season as agent Scully on
"The X-Files" - providing that there is a ninth season. Producers
convinced Anderson to extend her contract through the 2001-02 season,
even though they're not sure the series itself will run beyond the
upcoming season. David Duchovny will be leaving after appearing
in about half of this season's episodes and producers have signed
Robert Patrick to co-star with Anderson in the post-Duchovny era. But
one source reports that FOX-TV may not bring the show back for a ninth
season if it performs poorly in the ratings race this year. Series
creator Christ Carter stated that, one way or another, he's hoping to
make more "X-Files" movies.
