[ENG >ITA ] "So so", "So and so"

(in risposta a chi mi chiedeva come stavo, tanto per non tirarsi dietro
la sfiga di chi pronuncia le parole "sto benissimo, grazie") mi è stato
detto che la prima espressione "non si usa", o le sono quantomeno
preferibili le forme (se proprio si vuol dire di stare bene)
"not so bad", "not so good", o "mustn't grumble",
e che la seconda espressione significa che qualcuno is like a
pain in the... neck.
Cosa significano le due espressioni?
Cosa c'è di vero?
C'è vita nell'universo?

Effettivamente, quando un inglese ti chiede "How are you?", non vuole
sentire la veritŕ.
Si aspetta una risposta tipo: "Fine, thank you".
Comunque:
"So-so" significa cosě cosě. Si usa, anche se non č comunissimo. Anch'io
direi piuttosto "could be worse", o qualcosa del genere.
"So-and-so" significa o "tal del tale" quando hai dimenticato il nome di
qualcuno, oppure una persona antipatica - a pain in the neck come dici tu.

Io so&so l'ho sentito usare dagli inglesi nell'accezione che intendi
te..Cioe' "cosi' cosi'".

Io invece che sono londinese non credo di aver mai sentito dire "so so" nel
senso di "così così". Ma forse è americano tradotto dall'italiano come "don't
break my balls".

Hi Chris,
I don't think it has any other meaning, does it? I come from Leicester, and I've
also lived in London and Yorkshire, and I've certainly heard it used, although I
wouldn't say it's very common.
I shouldn't think it's Italo-American - you can find it in any English (UK)
dictionary.

You are quite right and it is difficult to imagine ' so-so' having any meaning other than cosi' cosi'.
It most certainly is not Italo-American and whilst not common as you say, nonetheless it is in use and likewise have I also heard it on numerous occasions.

Your humble servant is flattered that HRH should have noticed the absence of one of your subjects for a brief time.
The undersigned thought the timing right to venture forth and explore some of the may splendours your stunning country has to offer. Usually, when I return to this faire land, I am duty bound to remain in the vicinity of family, and whilst this does fortuitously encompass several different regions of the land, nonetheless did I think it opportune to venture beyond the confines of family regions. A wise decision if I say so myself.
I regret my choice not and many splendours indeed was I fortunate to behold. I should also like to mention that Italian hospitality is something to be well and truly proud of.
On returning, I was pleased to note the growth of this group and also what appears to be the return of HRH Arianna, as observed by our own Peltio.

As I wrote elsewhere, I went travelling a little to a region of this country which was truly quite spectacular. Perhaps next time I get 'itchy feet', I should give some prior indication of my intent to leave you all. I must say however, I did miss you.

If I might point out though, it seems you also have been gone a while, or is that merely server problems and we'd really rather not dwell on those less pleasant aspects of internet life?
