Is there a word in English to name a room that is used as a place for
personal hobbies, like sewing or pottery or whatever? I had to write a
friend that I have one, and I wasn't able to say it without using a long
sentence. I'm wondering if there's a shorter way..."D.I.Y. room"? "home
lab"?

Of course, it depends on the situation, but I'll try to describe to you
some typical naming behaviors.

I can't remember having heard anyone refer to a room in their house as a
"hobby room", but the term can be used. I have often heard rooms that
are used for a singular purpose called by the name of that purpose,
thus; a home may have a sewing room, or pottery studio.

A room may be referred to generically as a "studio" but such rooms are
usually outside of the home, in an out-building or converted garage, in
a basement, or at a different location from the home. Sometimes a small
room in the main house that is fit for use by one or two people, and not
used for typical living room functions, may be called a "den". Hobbies
may be conducted in the den. A den may be configured and furnished as
any other room one would find in a home, perhaps with carpets, and
wallpaper, and drapes. A studio, however, would tend to be configured
for a particular work purpose and may not have the comfortable amenities
of a room for living. It would more likely have a hard floor, window
blinds, and unadorned walls. Of course all these generalizations are
subjective and relate only to common connotations of the chosen name.

After writing this, I find that a Google search for "hobby room" returns
245,000 instances. I begin to wonder if it is more common than I
thought. However, "sewing room" returns 517,000 instances, so glean from
that what you will. To Google "den" would be pointless because the
returns would include animal dens as well as the den of a home. To
Google "studio" would be even less informative because it has so many
commercial applications.

Thank you for your long and clear explanation. I'm still in trouble
because my room is inside the house, but it's bare and has no central
heating system. I'm going to hang a couple of paintings and lay a
carpet, so that I can think of it as a "den" from now on :-)

In fact, I had tried to cope on my own surfing the Internet, but I got lost!

I think a room such as the one you are describing would tend to take
the name of the hobby itself. My neighbor across the street has a
"music room" and my friend has a "sewing room" in her house. If it's
used for more than one hobby, we would probably call it "family room",
and if there isn't a family living there, then probably "den" would be
a good term.

My wife calls her's a craft room. Mine is my home office/study, though my
wife just calls it a mess!

I think 'den' would be appropriate. Tom's den---the room in the house
where Tom does his stuff.
