I find the scenes where black criminals talk amongst themselves quite
hard to follow at times.
Is it just that I haven't met enough black Americans or are these
scenes a bit tricky
even for Americans to follow?

It's not that you haven't met enough black Americans, you just haven't met
the right (or is it wrong?) black Americans.
I would imagine that even Condoleeza Rice might find some of the
prison/gangsta/rap/homey language difficult to follow. After all, it's a
language of insiders, not intended to be understood outside the community.
When elements of the language become mainstream, they are discarded and
replacements coined.
I might have a problem understanding a conversation between two Cockneys
flogging fish in Billingsgate.
