Questo "portatile" del peso di svariati kg mi è stato consegnato per la
rottamazione
prima di buttarlo, ovviamente, lo ho provato e ho cercato notizie sul web
in quanto presenta alcune caratteristiche molto particolari
cominciamo con l'annuncio, nel 1998, che riporto in fondo al post.
la prima cosa che mi è saltata all'occhio è stata il prezzo di lancio:
This stylish notebook, which boasts some of the hottest new

VAT.
6447 euro al cambio di oggi, roba che ci compero un non-so-nemmeno-io-che-
cosa :)
è descritto come "high-end multimedia notebook" ed è il primo ad essere
completamente riciclabile (the world's first 100% recyclable notebook)
prima delle specifiche, ecco le due caratteristiche curiose
una è ancora una volta una prima mondiale, l'altra è un passo in avanti
nella sicurezza dei dati:
the world's first notebook PC to feature a detachable infra-red keyboard
and an integral chipcard reader as standard
quindi:
tastiera staccabile dal corpo macchina e utilizzabile a distanza :O
sotto la tastiera un lettore di smart-card (?) per la sicurezza del
sistema

passiamo alle caratteristiche dei componenti: c'è tanta tecnologia dentro
questo mattone, spinta al massimo per l'epoca:

Il modello in mano mia ha il P2 MMX a 300MHz, quindi non è propriamente
il modello base (o più probabilmente è una versione successiva), e il
disco da 5Gb
la RAM è di 128Mb che sono più che sufficienti a far girare
dignitosamente il s.o., windows 98 (in tedesco... ho il floppy e il cd di
installazione)
display da 14 pollici abbondanti, scheda video predisposta per "full
screen/full motion MPEG 2 playback" e ovviamente ;) "integrated 3-D
stereo sound"
c'è il lettore floppy, il lettore CD si è perso per strada negli anni
ricchissima la dotazione di porte: joystick, video composito, vga, usb,
seriale, parallela, tastiera, mouse, microfono, cuffia, audio, infrarosso
sul frontale (per la tastiera) e sul retro, slot pcmcia (con scheda modem
56k, purtroppo senza il cavetto)
c'è un piccolo display sopra la tastiera che indica la temperatura (del
processore immagino)
era venduto con tre anni di garanzia bring-in
adesso lo rimetto nella sua borsa originale, in attesa di tempi migliori
per una ripulita e reinstallazione (ci son su i documenti e la posta del
proprietario)

Siemens Nixdorf Enterprise & Personal Computing Division
today announced the pricing of the SCENIC Mobile 800, its
new high-end multimedia notebook.
This stylish notebook, which boasts some of the hottest new
technology in the market, is priced at £4,499, excluding
VAT. Shipments will begin in July, with widespread
availability from August.
Senior product manager Steve Gales said: "The SCENIC Mobile
800 sets new standards in mobile computing. It's the world's
first notebook PC to feature a detachable infra-red keyboard
and an integral chipcard reader as standard. This key
security feature ensures total protection of mobile data as
well as the ability to use security solutions such as
TrustedNet or chipcard-based home banking applications."
The SCENIC Mobile 800 also has the distinction of being the
world's first 100% recyclable notebook PC. It is encased in
an environmentally-friendly magnesium chassis which provides
maximum durability, exceptional heat dissipation
capabilities and stylish good looks.
The new notebook is powered by the ultra-fast 266Mhz Intel
Pentium* II processor and incorporates Siemens Nixdorf's
advanced FlexiBay technology. This technology enables the
internal hard drive to be expanded from 5 GB as standard to
24 GB, which is the largest capacity available on any
notebook PC. The FlexiBay modules can also be used to
support the standard 24x CD-ROM drive or optional DVD/ZIP.
Four slots allow the notebook's memory to be individually
configured with between 64 MB and 256 MB of SDRAM. To
satisfy high-end multimedia needs, the SCENIC Mobile 800
features a 14.1-inch display and offers 4 MB of SGRAM, full
screen/full motion MPEG 2 playback and integrated 3-D stereo
sound. For highly intensive graphics applications, the new
product uses an ATI Rage Pro LT 3-D graphics chipset.
