A SiS630, and undetected laptop display, and an odd resolution problem... the bag of chips? Not until this works.

Hi,
I just installed RH7.2 for the 3rd time, and am having a slightly odd
problem. As the install runs through, using a rather nice install GUI
(displaying perfectly, I might add), I tell it my preferences, which
packages to install, and it installs. Then it asks me about my monitor...
the first 2 times I installed, I chose 'Laptop display 1024x768' then on the
next screen: '1024 x 768' and 32 bit colour. The last time I installed, I
tried leaving the 'Undetected monitor' option as it was (instead of changing
it to Laptop Display) and then 1024x768 and 32 bit again. Each and every
time, however, I boot after all this and I get a display that seems to be
about twice the height and width it should be, and indented about an inch
from the left. Thus I can see the top half of the left 40% or so of the
screen. I can, therefore, not see the gnome bar at the bottom of the screen,
as the pointer disappears and I have no idea what I might be clicking on.

If you can sort the above out, brilliant. My more realistic ask, however, is
that someone tells me what command line program I can use to change the
resolution to 640x480 or something, as the command prompts work fine. If
said utility is on the RH installation cds, how do I install it from them?
As you may be able to guess, I am a linux newbie, so all help is greatly
appreciated.

Phil

I have had some problems with the sis630 on a couple of desktops so
you may want to take a look at recent a post of mine in alt.os.linux.redhat.
You may also check an article that has a lot of useful info on sis630 by
searching for 'vojta sis' in google.com's advanced search... Should be the
first link/article that pops up. It also has a link to an unofficial 'sis'
driver that
works nicely a 1024x768 - 16 bit color. I can vouch for that since I am
looking at it right now.

Chris.

Phil,

Try

# Xconfigurator (That's big X)

from the command line. It takes you into a text-based config program
that has worked sometimes for me.
You may be limited to 800 x 600 res.

Good luck,
Bill
