PRESS RELEASE

Issued: Sunday 09 July 2000

This an automated E-Mail from the Falmouth Lifeboat Station Web site
to inform you of a recent callout as detailed below :

LIFEBOAT CALL

Boat: Inshore

Date: Sunday 09 July, 2000

Service: Mayday from French Yacht "Florilege" after going aground

Crew: Dave Nicoll (Helmsman), Carl Beardmore, Marc Thomas

Location: Porth Saxon, near Durgan, Helford River

Weather: NW 7-8, Rough Sea, Good Visibility, Partly Cloudy

The Action:
At 12:23 Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat was launched by Falmouth Coastguard
after the French Yacht 'Florilege' put out a Mayday reporting that she
was aground in the Helford River. The Offshore Lifeboat and Falmouth
Coastguard Mobile were also tasked to assist, as well as a number of
local boats, which responded to the Mayday.

At 12:34 the Inshore Lifeboat arrived alongside the 38ft yacht which
was aground at Porth Saxon, ½ mile South of Durgan. The Dive Boat
'Seaquest' had already managed to get a line onboard the yacht and was
trying to pull her clear. Two crewman were placed onboard the yacht
and once the Inshore Lifeboat had been tied alongside the yacht it used
its power to help hold the yacht off the rocks while the 'Seaquest'
manoeuvred to a nearby mooring, to assist with pulling the yacht clear.
Unfortunately the mooring would not hold the yachts weight so the
'Seaquest' had to drop the tow and the Inshore Lifeboat, assisted by
another Rigid Inflatable held the yacht clear until the Offshore
Lifeboat arrived at 12:47 and passed a tow line. The yachts anchors
were then cut and the Offshore Lifeboat towed her into deeper water,
where the yacht was prepared for the tow back to Falmouth. Once the
tow was underway the Inshore Lifeboat returned to Porth Saxon and
managed to recover the yachts anchors before returning to Falmouth.
The yacht was safely berthed in Falmouth at Port Pendennis Marina by 13:
55.

The Inshore Lifeboat was back on its slipway by 14:04, where it was
refuelled and ready for service by 14:30.
