Hoffman , whose performances in such pictures as "The Graduate" "and
"Midnight Cowboy" both of which earned him Academy Award nominations as Best
Actor have established him as one of our most gifted young actors , feels
that the character he portrays in "HARRY KELLERMAN" is perhaps the most
complex and richly drawn character he has played so far.
Director Ulu Grosbard (who guided "The Subject was Roses" to Broodway and
motion picture acclaim) has placed on film a multidimensional probe of the
sense of isolation of a man re-examining his life with humnor and sadness.
Hoffman as George Soloway flashes from past to present to become aware that
the fame and wealth from his work do not make up for the self-betrayal.

Barbara Harris ,who has becomea hit on Broadway time and again with her
dazzling talents in such plays as "The Apple Tree," "'On A Clear day You Can
See Forever' and "Oh Dad, Poor Dad...," co-stars with Hoffman . She portrays
a lonely and tortured would-be actress who becomes just another broken link
in Georgie's life, unable to reach the dark, mysterious stranger inside of
him.
New York City forms the backrground for"HARRY KELLERMAN." Location filming
brought the cast and crew to such locations as a Fifth Avenue penthouse
ovelooking Central Parkrk (one of the mnost striking sets ever constructed
for a motion picture) , Coney Island, the BMT subway in Brooklyn, the
Lincoln Tunnel,the elegant Lunt-Fonanne Theatre and a special sequence
filmed at the now-shuttered rock palace Fillmore East . To achieve
thehighest degree of realism , Grosbard insisted that Hoffman apper live in
front of the regular audience, with cameras capturing Hoffman's appearance
and the reaction of the fans .
The music for ' HARRY KELLERMAN" was composed by Shel Silverstein, who has
written, among numerous hits , Johnny Cash's recording of"A Boy Named Sue."
Also featured in the distinguished cast are jack Warden; the late David
Burns, whose performing legacy
includes originating the part of Horace Vandergelder in "Hello, Dolly" ;
comedian Dom De Luise;actress Rose Gregorio , who appeared with Hoffman in
Broadways "Jimmy Shine"; and Gabriel Dell, last seen in Elaine May's hit
play, "Adatation" and "Next"
Vinceny Canby in the new York Times states that "Harry Kellerman" is
"fancily and stylishly put together" and Gene Shalit on WNBC-TV raves that
"DustinHoffman is brilliant . The film has exhilarating strength. One of the
best times that I've had at the movies this year"
In examining one man's life , "Harry Kellerman" probes the beauty , joy and
tragedy that are the many-textured nuances of all lives .
Harry Kellerman is the best portrait I have ever seen on celluloid of the
inescapable nature of neurotic pain. The fixated, tortured soul--albeit
tortured on the small, inner scale of suffering--awakens to his pain, sees a
possible escape route, and struggles to hurl himself through it. But then he
only finds himself bank again at square one, the tether of his Gordian knot
unbroken and unfrayed. Told with humor and absurdity appropriate to the
subject matter, Harry is a delightful, original, and insightful movie.
Barbara Harris gives her best performance in the audition scene. The veteran
actor was never so vunerable, so delightful and so beautiful. Hoffman played
fantastically to her tenderness. And Gabe Dell,so many years ago and the
Dead End Kids and in this movie, a swinger. Doesn't the man ever age,
whatever the guy is eating and drinking, let me know. It took me about 15
years before I found a tape and now it's #1 on my list. I feel very
fortunate to have it. Hell, I even liked Dom and that's going the whole nine
yards. Great show to watch on a dark and stormy night.
