Per l'anniversario della Vittoria sul nazifascismo. Great Soviet war
movies

On May 9th of every year people of Russia and other countries formerly
part of the Soviet Union celebrate Victory Day that marks the end of the
Great Patriotic War. On May 8th, 1945 (May 9th by Moscow Time) Nazi
Germany capitulated to the Soviet Union in the World War II. This holiday
honors 27 million people from all parts of the former Soviet Union who
died in the course of this terrible war. The largest numbers of civilian
deaths in a single city was 1.2 million citizens dead during the Siege of
Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and about 1.5 million dead in the Battle of
Stalingrad (now Volgograd). In Russia almost all the families have at
least one person who took part in the war. The number of survivors is
getting less every year.

While those who witnessed these tragic events may no longer be with us as
time goes on, the memory of those events should be preserved and passed on
to new generations through stories, books, and film. Because only by
knowing the past can we hope to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Many great films have been made about the Soviet experience in World War
II. Here we list just a few of these films that also happen to be readily
available to be watched on-line with English subtitles.

Destiny of a man (1959)

A multi-award winning film adaptation of the classic novel by Mikhail
Sholokhov directed by the famous Sergei Bondarchuk. The movie tells the

War II.

The Cranes Are Flying (1957)

suffered to the Soviet psyche as a result of the Great Patriotic War.

Ivan's Childhood (1962)

A Soviet film directed by the famous director Andrei Tarkovsky. The film
tells the story of orphan boy Ivan and his experiences during World War
II. 12-year old Ivan works as a spy at the eastern front. The small Ivan
can cross the German lines unnoticed to collect information. Three Soviet
officers try to take care of this boy-child. Ivan's Childhood was one of
several Soviet films of the late 1950s, such as The Cranes Are Flying and
Ballad of a Soldier that looked at the human cost of war and did not
glorify the war experience as did films produced before the Khrushchev
Thaw.

They Fought For Their Motherland (1975)

Another great war film by Sergei Bondarchuk. In July 1942, in the Second
World War, the rearguard of the Russian army protects the bridgehead of
the Don River against the German army while the retreating Russian troops
cross the bridge. While they move back to the Russian territory through
the countryside, the soldiers show their companionship, sentiments, fears
and heroism to defend their motherland Russia.

One-Two, Soldiers Were Going... (1976)

The tragic and the comic, the heroic and the lyrical - all has interwoven
onscreen into an unusual story about the fathers remaining forever young
and the children coming to the place where exactly thirty years ago their
most dear ones took the last deadly battle... A great film directed by
Leonid Bykov.

The Liberation (1971)
