Thedisk offers protection against brute force attacks. After five incorrect PIN inputs, the device needs to be unplugged from and plugged into the computer again in order to allow for more tries. Five more incorrect inputs after that, and the attacker (or you, if you forgot the PIN) needs to repeat the aforementioned process, but this time a red light will start to flash. If this happens, check the manual to see how to enable ten more attempts to input the correct PIN. After a total of 20 wrong attempts, the disk will have to be reset and reformatted in order to be used again. Naturally, the data that was on it will be gone.

diskAshur PRO comes with a sheet specifying the initial usage details. For more information, you can download the 21 page product manual from the product homepage. The PDF contains detailed step-by-step guides related to all aspects of product setup and usage. A FAQ section on the web site extends the manual and contains some interesting Q&A entries related to specific elements of diskAshur PRO usage.

diskAshur PRO is the easiest way to set up a secure hard drive backup of your data. You can use it on any OS, you just need to format the drive to the appropriate file system. Not requiring any crypto software makes it even more dependable and your data will always be just a PIN away.

If data is being written to the drive, unplugging the diskAshur M2 will result in incomplete data transfer and possible data corruption.

To unlock the diskAshur M2 with the Admin PIN, please follow the simple steps in the table belowHow to unlock with the Admin PINLEDLED State1. As for a used hard drive, you may need to copy or back up all saved data to another device first. Then, use Disk Management to delete all existing partitions. Then, continue with the following steps to initialize the drive:

Therefore, if you don't want to lose files stored on your hard drive, using data recovery software is necessary. You may refer to recover data from unknown not initialized hard drive for detailed instructions.

"When I plugged in my external hard drive, Western Digital My Passport 0740 (500GB), PC said that it's successfully installed however it did not appear on My Computer. Also, when I went into system tools, it said disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, and unallocated. Does anyone know how to recover data when a hard drive is not initialized or how to initialize disk without losing data?"

Like the case above, the disk unknown not initialized issue usually occurs unexpectedly in all the Windows versions, including Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8 and 7, and it annoys users. When the issue occurs, your external hard drive may show "unallocated space" or nothing about the disk capacity in Disk Management (as shown in the image below), so you cannot open and access the data on this disk.

Although the disk shows unknown and not Initialized in both situations, they present different information about the hard drive's capacity, which means different reasons cause them. The most common problem is MBR corruption.

If disk unknown not initialized is accompanied by unallocated, the likely cause is MBR corruption on the hard drive. MBR, which stands for Master Boot Record, is the first sector on an MBR or GPT disk. It provides information on loading Windows and on the partition of the disk. Thus, when it is corrupted, you will certainly encounter issues, including the disk showing as not initialized.

To fix a disk from turning into not initialized in such a case, you can initialize the disk directly. Then comes the question - does initializing a disk erase data? Actually, initializing a disk will rebuild the master boot record and format the hard drive. It will erase the files on your disk. In this article, we will introduce six methods to fix the disk not initialized without data loss, and you can gather information quickly from the following table:

Suppose the data recovery fails to get back your files. In that case, EaseUS data recovery service still can help you out, which repairs storage media that have crashed, mechanically failed, experienced physical damage, and worse. Contact the experts to get help now.

Physical damage will inevitably result in serious issues on a storage medium, including disk unknown not initialized. If the methods above fail to solve the problem for you, sending your device to professionals for manual repair is a good choice.

A common reason that leads to disk unknown not initialized is that you fail to initialize the drive with a message saying the request could not be performed because of I/O error appears. This causes your disk to be shown as unknown or not initialized.

When you can't initialize a hard disk, disk unknown not initialized is not the only issue you encounter. For detailed explanations and corresponding solutions, head to our article about how to fix the i/O device error.

It's been a while since I did a security review for my site, so I was quite interestedwhen the people at the Dutch site Tweakers.netasked me if I could take a look at the security of the iStorage DiskGenie. Sincemy previous reviews, I've learned a bit more about hacking microcontrollers andsince I was keen on finding a subject to try my newfound skills on, I decided toagree to have the device sent to me.

The DiskGenie came in a fairly standard cardboard box. The device comes in varioussizes; as you can see, I've got the 250G version.

Unpacking, part 1. The disk is delivered with a pouch and a Y-split USB-cable forPCs which can't deliver the needed voltage on one single USB-port. The disk itselfis quite nice to look at: the enclosure is made of a rubbery plastic which doesn'tleave any fingerprints. It reminds me of the lid of my ThinkPad laptop.

The enclosed leaflet is a nice intro into how the drive works, with more infoobtainable in the full manual.Basically, the disk is shipped wit the default password being '123456'. Enter that, press the unlock-key and the diskbecomes readable. To change the password, you have to enter a special administration mode by holding two keys and entering the old password, followedagain by the unlock-key. When youwant to unlock the disk, you get 50 tries. After that, you have to enter a specialcode (described in the manual) and then you can try for another 50 times. After that, the disk locks up and you can only reset it, erasing all the data on the disk. To makethings even more irritating for a wannabe brute-forcer, every 6 tries the disk has tobe un- and replugged. To give feedback to the user, there's a RGB-led that lights upin different colours to indicate the mode the drive is in. It can also blink toindicate e.g. the password is wrong.

One of the nice things, by the way, is that this disk is completely OS-agnostic:the manual has partitioning and formatting instructions for Windows and Mac OSX, butI could get it to work under Linux with no problems whatsoever. This means I don'tget to do any disassembly of x86 programs but have to look into the hardware tosee how secure the thing is.

So let's say you have some data that you want to protect and you need the convenience of having it on a portable drive. A standard portable hard drive just doesn't cut it. Sure, they are inexpensive, but you really need a level of security that just isn't found on those types of drives. Well, iStorage has something that can keep your data secure. How secure? How about Real-Time Military Grade AES-XTS 256-bit Full-Disk Hardware Encryption secure? Okay, maybe not everyone needs that level of security, but if you do, then the iStorage diskAsure Pro2 can do the job.

There are two flavors of this drive - one uses the old standard hard drive (HDD) and the other uses a solid state drive (SSD). The unit for review today is the HDD version. Inside the box is the drive, along with a handy carrying case. There is also some documentation for the warranty info and a nice startup guide in several languages. A detailed user manual comes stored on the drive and is worth going through to understand and set up the various functions of the drive.
