Hey all.
We're an academic institution based in Mumbai and we're trying to build our capacities in working with sensor data.

The project involves the following steps:
1. Sensors are placed around the city which record temperature and humidity data. The sensor kits are built using Arduino.
2. Ideally, data from the sensors must be pushed to the istsos instance that we run on our own server every hour.

How do I automate the process of collecting data from the sensors and pushing it to our istsos instance? (I assume we would have to add a GSM shield to the arduino board, since connecting the sensors around the city via WIFI or relay ports is not a plausible option)

I'm fairly new to the istsos platform and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Ankush

Hello Ankush,
I am running a similar setup using Rotronix RHT sensors and OrangePi Zero instead of arduino. It also has USB port connectivity, thus installing a compatible USB-3G dongle for internet connectivity is pretty easy. I would also suggest the use of a VPN tunnel for better privacy. For arduino though, an excellent choice would be the  Xbee shields to provide free wireless communication. With the use of Xbees the maximum node distance can be about 2km (depending on the model).

Best,
Pantelis

Hey Pantelis,
Thanks for such a prompt reply!
Could you tell me a bit more about how you set it up? I'm fairly new to this and still trying to wrap my head around the codes, etc.
As for the Xbee shield, unfortunately it won't work for us, since the sensors will be deployed at much greater distances and definitely not in line-of-sight. But very interesting technology.

Also, do you know of any online resources that could help me with this set up? A basic, how-to-guide?

Thanks again.

Dear Ankush,
you might want to take a look at http://4onse.org/tutorial/ specifically looking at the 4onse-mod solution.

I hope it can help...

Thanks Massimiliano!
This was great, and it seems like it'll help us achieve our goals.
Just wanted to know if the pushing of data from the sensor kit will happen directly from the board to istsos. In the steps for Code Uploading, after connecting Arduino to the computer through a USB Cable and setting the appropriate variables in the sketch stationFull.ino, am I correct to assume that henceforth, the kit will push data directly to istsos without having to connect it to a computer using a USB cable again? If so, that's exactly the kind of solution we're looking for.

Thanks again.

Best,
Ankush

Dear Ankush,
I confirm that the station will inject data directly in istSOS, given that the istSOS endpoint is accessible on the Web and correctly configured.

Best,
Maxi
