RealMediaVariable Bitrate (RMVB) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia digital container format developed by RealNetworks. As opposed to the more common RealMedia container, which holds streaming media encoded at a constant bitrate (CBR), RMVB is typically used for multimedia content stored locally. Files using this format have the file extension ".rmvb".
RMVB files are popular for distributing Asian content, especially Chinese television episodes and movies.[citation needed] For this reason, they have become noticeably present (though not entirely popular, partly due to their incompatibility with other media players) on file sharing platforms such as BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella.[citation needed]
On the Windows platform, the proprietary RealPlayer SP (RealPlayer 10 and later) and the open-sourced Media Player Classic support RMVB, using an appropriate DirectShow filter or Real Alternative. On Linux and other Unix-like platforms, MPlayer, xine, and Totem are able to play RMVB files using the open-source, reverse-engineered RMVB implementation in FFmpeg. The format is also supported for playback by the cross-platform VLC media player.
I found a batch file that can convert rmvb to mp4 using ffmpeg command, but the filesize become very big after converted(700mb become 3gb), so can I change something in the script below to make the filesize smaller and same quality?
(just a sample file name). Seems innocent, isn't it? But the icon is very suspicious, because I set up Win7 to use VLC to open .rmvb files, but the icon is a blue play button, so I right click on the file and look at the properties, and it says "Application".
So it turns out the file is named happy cat.rmvb [150 spaces].exe So the .rmvb is not really the extension. The real extension is .exe but it is hidden to the far right of the name. Oh well, I almost open it and click "OK to open" because I usually is not so afraid of .rmvb files -- or, it could have been .txt which have made me even less suspicious.
So my question is, how to avoid this kind of virus? I don't want to constantly pay for anti-virus software, and also, not all virus program can catch all virus (it may catch 95% or 99% but not all). If that simple .exe is merely simple lines of program to wipe out the whole C: drive or D: drive, there is really no way to prevent it, especially it seems innocent enough for me to approve to open it.
I just bought a brand new wd tv media player but when I plug my hard drive onto it all the rmvb files does not show up. is there anything i can do to fix that. eg download a codex or something and put it on the machine. I really need it to play rmvb files because most of my file are that format.

However you almost certainly don't need to transcode your audio in your specific case anyways (assuming you just want the audio to play at the same quality as the original, and not try tweakings) because the rmvb audio stream is probably already in aac format, which is what you need.
Good Morning. I'm using the latest beta version and I'm having problems, still related to the rmvb format. If before the LG app forced the server to transcode, now nothing happens, it just gives an error, the server doesn't even try to transcode anymore. What's the problem? I tried it on TV and Firefox and it gives error without trying to transcode. On the phone the video plays normally, without a transcode. The log of the last attempt, in Forefox, is attached.

The RMVB file format, standing for 'RealMedia Variable Bitrate', is a video format created by RealNetworks, Inc. It is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia container format. As opposed to the more common RealMedia container, which holds streaming media encoded at a constant bit rate, RMVB is typically used for multimedia content stored locally. Files using this format have the file extension ".rmvb".
The advantage is RMVB format abandons Average Bit Rate and use Variable Bit Rate to compress video data. RMVB files have become a popular format for movie titles because they have smaller file sizes and lower bitrate with better quality compared to DivX.
Are you having problems opening a RMVB file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your RMVB files.
Files that contain the .rmvb extension contain video files that can be played on a user's personal computer. The acronym "RMVB" stands for "RealMedia Variable Bitrate". RealNetworks Inc created the format.
The RMVB file format is perfect for distributing movies on the Web, as the file sizes are smaller than the traditional video formats even though the video quality is superior. This file format has become very popular in the distribution of Anime and Asian movies. File sharing programs such as BitTorrent and Emule are known to use the RMVB format along with other P2P file formats.
These apps are known to open certain types of RMVB files. Remember, different programs may use RMVB files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.

RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is an extension of the RealMedia (RM) container format. The RMVB files use the .rmvb file extension. RealMedia (RM) holds streaming media encoded at constant bitrate whereas RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) has variable bitrate. RMVB is typically used for the files stored locally.
The compression used in RealMedia is similar to MPEG-4 Part 10. In RMVB files, the amount of output data per time segment varies. This results in files with a better quality-to-space ratio, as the bits are used more flexibly in encoding. The structure of RMVB files is similar to RM files. For details, please view the RealMedia (RM) article.
If you have many Asian movie and TV series downloads on your computer, you must have found those videos are in the extension of .rmvb or .rm. Unlike the popular MP4 videos that you can open on almost any player, RMVB files cannot be opened by Windows Media Player on Windows or QuickTime on Mac.
