The following people have all been grandmasters (GM) of chess. The title is awarded to players who have met the standards required by the sport's governing body, FIDE. Other than world champion, it is the highest title a chess player can attain and is awarded for life, although FIDE regulations allow for the revocation of titles for cheating or fraud. FIDE has awarded 2067 grandmaster titles, not counting three GM titles that have been revoked.

Player names are generally listed as they appear in FIDE records such as the FIDE Chess Profile pages, although accented letters are used where they apply, which FIDE databases simplify to the English alphabet. When player names or spellings have changed, the most recent is used even if it is different than that when the title was awarded which is then listed in the Notes column. Variants in transliteration such as "Alexei" vs. "Alexey" are not mentioned.

FIDE has issued ID codes since 1998; some older grandmasters were never assigned an ID. For living grandmasters, this field is a weblink to the FIDE Chess Profile page which usually gives the year the GM title was awarded and the player's birth year. FIDE IDs for deceased grandmasters are retained in this table to aid matching with older FIDE records such as the FIDE rating lists.

Title Year is the year FIDE officially awarded the title. Sometimes this may be a year after the player completed the final norm requirements for the title. In a few cases (e.g. Esteban Canal), the title was awarded retrospectively, many years after the relevant achievements.

Many people around the world have the misconception that grandmasters, or even just masters are incredibly smart in everything they do; however, they are perceived as introverted nerds. Personally, that has not been very surprising to me. I too have had similar perceptions of masters for quite a while. Whether it was my parents telling me that chess players were incredibly strong in math and STEM, or even just people on the internet influencing my point of view, I could never find the answer to whether grandmasters truly obtained these traits.

This blog post is absolutely fantastic! The content is insightful and well-researched, and your writing style is engaging and easy to follow. I love how you provide practical tips that can be applied right away. Keep up the great work!

Instead of containing randomly spawned monsters as in most other maps, the Hall of Grandmasters includes other exiles based on characters of players who purchased a Grandmaster Supporter Pack and used a Grandmaster ExportGrandmaster ExportConsumableExport your current character as a grandmasterClick this item to export and send your current character to Grinding Gear Games staff for use in the Hall of Grandmasters unique map. For more information, visit www.pathofexile.com/grandmasters.

The map consists of a foyer with several large doorways. Between each door is a hall of 50 grandmasters, separated by forcefields so you fight waves of 5 at a time. Currently there are 4 halls (Hall of the Heroes, Hall of the Eternal, Hall of the Fallen, and Hall of the Twisted), making 200 Grandmasters or 40 waves in the map. The waves are randomly[1] organised by approximate difficulty and get progressively harder.

According to the development plan, "Grandmasters using Vaal Skills will gain one Vaal Soul per skill every five seconds. It's currently possible to encounter Tormented Spirits in the map. You will not encounter Strongboxes (other than those at the end of each hall) or Rogue Exiles." [2] However currently Grandmasters generate 2 Vaal souls every second.

Some of the Grandmasters have combinations of legacy gear and very heavy defences, making them hard to kill for a lot of builds. In general these can be categorized by high recovery (life regen, ES regen), high avoidance mechanics (Block, Dodge, Evasion), high damage reduction (reduced elemental damage taken, reduced physical damage taken) and Immunities (Chaos Inoculation, Gluttony of Elements, legacy Immortal Call).

Dealing with avoidance mechanics: Block Chance Reduction SupportBlock Chance Reduction SupportSupport, Duration

Supported Skills inflict Overpowered for 4 seconds when Blocked
Enemies have -(10-20)% chance to Block Attack or Spell Damage from Supported Skills

Additional Effects From 1-20% Quality:
Supported Skills have (0.25-5)% reduced Enemy Block ChanceThis is a Support Gem. It does not grant a bonus to your character, but to skills in sockets connected to it. Place into an item socket connected to a socket containing the Skill Gem you wish to augment. Right click to remove from a socket. is a must for hit based builds. If you cannot replace one of your links then you can link a fast hitting attack/spell with it to quickly reduce Grandmasters defences. Note that the "Monsters cannot Block your Attacks" Attack Mastery will not work on Grandmasters. A suggestion is Holy Flame Totem - Multiple Totems - Faster Casting - Block Chance Reduction which will reduce Grandmasters block chance to zero in about a second.

Dealing with damage reduction: Some Grandmasters have very high physical reduction, if you struggle with this consider converting some of your damage to elemental. As with players, reducing (not recommended due to overcapped resistances) and penetrations is a massive increase to the damage taken.

Dealing with Immunities: Chaos skills are NOT RECOMMENDED as there are several characters with Chaos Inoculation which makes completion impossible. All other forms of immunities, including legacy Immortal Call are time based or can be solved by converting damage or dealing a mix of elemental and physical damage.

(!)Minions: Due to the way PvP damage scaling works, minions such as Spectres and Animate Guardian are extremely vulnerable in this map. They can be instantly killed by some grandmasters even with 50000+ Life and multiple defensive links such as Minion Life Support, Meat Shield Support, and Elemental Army support. It is heavily recommended you deactivate your Animate Guardian so you do not lose any expensive equipped items.

ONE WEEK IN early March, on a blustery, windswept day, Fabiano Caruana decides to get away. He drives three hours west from his St. Louis apartment over winding gravel roads to reach his destination, a 2,000-acre compound in rural Missouri owned by a wealthy friend.

At 7:30 the next morning, he pulls on gray Mizzou sweats and matching running shorts, rubs the sleep from his eyes and heads out for his hourlong run with his training partner, Cristian Chirila. They jog up and down the hills around the farmland, whispering during water breaks about openings and effective chess permutations.

At 5-foot-6, Caruana has a lean frame, his legs angular and toned. He also has a packed schedule for the day: a 5-mile run, an hour of tennis, half an hour of basketball and at least an hour of swimming.

As he's jogging, it's easy to mistake him for a soccer player. But he is not. This body he has put together is not an accident. Caruana is, in fact, an American grandmaster in chess, the No. 2 player in the world. His training partner, Chirila? A Romanian grandmaster. And they're doing it all to prepare for the physical demands of ... chess? Yes, chess.

IT SEEMS ABSURD. How could two humans -- seated for hours, exerting themselves in no greater manner than intermittently extending their arms a foot at a time -- face physical demands?

The 1984 World Chess Championship was called off after five months and 48 games because defending champion Anatoly Karpov had lost 22 pounds. "He looked like death," grandmaster and commentator Maurice Ashley recalls.

In 2004, winner Rustam Kasimdzhanov walked away from the six-game world championship having lost 17 pounds. In October 2018, Polar, a U.S.-based company that tracks heart rates, monitored chess players during a tournament and found that 21-year-old Russian grandmaster Mikhail Antipov had burned 560 calories in two hours of sitting and playing chess -- or roughly what Roger Federer would burn in an hour of singles tennis.

Robert Sapolsky, who studies stress in primates at Stanford University, says a chess player can burn up to 6,000 calories a day while playing in a tournament, three times what an average person consumes in a day. Based on breathing rates (which triple during competition), blood pressure (which elevates) and muscle contractions before, during and after major tournaments, Sapolsky suggests that grandmasters' stress responses to chess are on par with what elite athletes experience.
