Hope all's well with everyone. I'm busy trying to set up my park district class….

A question or three for the East Coast branch of the family…. Does your version of Taikyoku Shi, the kata with the soft blocks created by Charles Cusumano, have any designated spots for kiai?

Are there designated kiai in either Gankaku Sho (Chinto) or Sunsu?

And are there designated kiai in Kusanku Sai, or the weapons kata Charles Cusumano created for the nunchaku, tonfa, or kama?

Please let me know!

Hi Chris,
I forwarded thus to my brother. I will check my book when I get home for the other questions. Bob

Hi Chris,

Best to you with the classes.

In a group situation, a kiai is in a specific place for the
presentation of an ordered performance. In class setting, a kiai
placement is taught as part of the technique. When an individual
is doing kata, it is not unusual for the kiai to be placed where that
person 'feels' it best. As Ron said, keep the kiai to one per
kata, or two at most if a very long kata.

You know that Sensei Murphy created 5 Taikyoku that were given to
beginning students to help them 'practice' specific techniques as seen
in each form. Then, he cut down to 3, and finally removed them
completely from Isshin-shorinji requirements.

Thanks so much for the well-wishes and information!

I've always personally felt that kiai belong at the strongest place in a kata, but the those spots vary according to a person's mood and individual abilities. And in a tournament I might add a few more to keep the judges' attention. It's a little like jazz, maybe. And in my back yard, to keep the neighbors from calling the police, I don't use any kiai. As I gear up to teach, I'm trying to reincorporate kiai into my workouts without disturbing the peace.

But most of our kata in the Midwest had designated techniques that we emphasized with kiai (and I'm not really using the right words there, but hopefully my meaning gets through). The kata that I learned from Shihan Cusumano, though, the ones that didn't make it to the Midwest branch, I never learned the kiai placements. Now I have them! Thanks!

I did know that Soke Murphy eventually eliminated the Taikyoku. I think in the end all he kept were Sanchin, Sunsu, Chinto/Gankaku Sho, Shihohi, and Seiuchin. I can't really give up the others, though— I don't feel as if I've yet learned everything they have to teach me.

Hi Chris,
If my memory serves me I taught the kiais at the top of the bar in all the taikyokus and on the last technique. This is how I remember them. Taikyokus are not katas per Sensei Murphy but we did Kiai as I remember it. Taikyku has has no kiais. No weapon forms my brother taught has a kiai. As far as the other katas go, I do a kiai on the round kick. Gankaku Sho on the flying front kick and the low side thrust before you go down to one knee. I hope this helps. Bob
