Thought I'd post an excerpt of a note that I sent to someone 363 days
ago as Tim has addressed a cornerstone of our system on the forum I
think the theme bears repeating here.

"Once the dust settles I expect that those of us outside the political
loop will continue as we have and share what we know/have with each
other. As I mentioned the genius of the system Sensei created was its
simplicity. He realized that all he went through brought him back to
the basics; that everything is just a recapitulation or theme in
variation of the basics. The System provides a foundation that allows
you to understand the arts as they apply to you. As you grow your
strong founding in the basic techniques will allow you to take on
board for evaluation anything you see. You may retain it for your
'toolbox' or discard it as extraneous. So you will fill your system
with that which is valuable to you. The System is a framework
provided by your father (Soke); a way to live... practice is a
metaphor for life. Our lives are ours and we live them by the rules
our parents/teachers gave us. Each must practice his way and, as Tim
pointed out yesterday, try not to judge others' ways. As my riding
mentor once observed you can learn from everyone....even if its just
what not to do. So don't be put off by someone wanting to make money
they may be able to give you something that fits well into your way.
If they can't just use the door you came in."

My riding mentor said all riding is is basic technique, good riding is
understanding those basics and their application, and all great riding
is is a flawless execution of the basics. In any art this is a truth.

You know, interestingly enough, there's another difference between
the Illinois and New Jersey branches of the style, and that's The
Basics, as opposed to the basics. Where the latter was concerned,
Shihan Heriaud always ran us through fundamental techniques and
combinations, emphasizing precision of technique and stance as we
worked through them, much as he would when drilling us in kata.

But we never had a formalized set of Basics, as Soke Murphy
demonstrated in Russ Tippitt's YouTube video.

But I agree with everything thus far stated: if I can't move from a
ready stance into a perfect back stace, execute a front snap kick,
and come down in a perfect zenkutsu stace against an imaginary
opponent (a very basic combination), then I probably lack the skill
and coordination to execute a spinning back kick, or even a simpler
and more realistic technique, against a live opponent.

Oh, and I'll never perfect that basic combination, so it's something I can keep working on forever.

where those like the isshin ryu basics? what is the
difference between the upper and lower case b? maybe
russ can say but i think sensei said that he pulled a
lot of essentials from basic isshin ryu while making
the footwork more dynamic. did the combos change or
were they the same week after week? i wonder if anyone
in the midwest is adopting the essentials. they could
be easily learned from the video and application would
come with a little reflection.

The combinations on which we worked changed from night to night. I
don't think there was a formal connection to the Isshinryu basics;
there may have been a lot of overlap since they were usually, well,
basic, but we weren't given combinations to memorize and recite in
the manner that we were given kata.

I practically live in the South so I'm not really sure what they're
doing up there these days. Maybe we should invite DragonFire and
Shihan Francis into this discussion; they'd be able to answer better
than I.

Sounds good to me but I THINK that Scott Francis was already invited
by Russ, I think.

looks like scott is on the list. i e- mailed him a few
months ago. you probably got the note that said he had
a huge backlog of e-mails do to some computer problem
or something and that a student was sifting through it
for him. so.... i have not heard from him.

Good Morning,
Yes if you check on the group page there is a list of the members and
Sensei Francis is there. As I mentioned you can invite others.
With regard to the basics. We drilled up and down the mat I assume as
Senseis Francis and Heraud do still.
It is an ideal way to get the reps in on a technique and work the
class as one. The basic technique we did included all types of
punches and kicks and combinations. That differed from the Isshin
Ryu basics which was a set of specific techniques done as one
steps. The last set, the Essentials and the Intuitive set are done
as you saw them or in motion. The questions answered by the basics of
Isshin Ryu were addressed by the taikyokus and pinans in Isshin
Shorinji. In the dojo setting in any system there is drilling Isshin
Ryu included. Drill has a number of purposes beyond the reps and
technique development among them the development of a team or group
spirit, the concept of moving with others, and feeling the rhythm
developed by the group.
