Using screen sharing on SL Server

This may be a repost, but it seems my original message did not make
it.

I am trying to access my SL server at the department via iSSH.
I can get there with ssh only,I get a command line.
But when I try to use VNC,I get
Unable to initialize connection to VNC server: localhost on port 5900,
error 'Connection to VNC server failed with message'

Googling showed that somebody suggested to do

defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing skipLocalAddressCheck -boolean
YES

on the SL server machine.
I tried, but it did not solve the problem.

Does anybody have detailed instructions how to make this work?

Make sure under Screen Sharing -> Computer Settings you have "VNC
viewers may control screen with password" checked and that a password
is set. Also, SL doesn't like 8-bit color connections so make sure
that's turned off.
