grid expedition status

Hi all, just checking in on my 'rest day'. Ed N7PHY and I drove 1800 miles to stay with Robert W6AJ, in Midland, TX. Robert is a grid-chaser of some reknown, having earned the FFMA award for working all 488 continental grids on 6 meters. We had a pleasant three-day trip, driving 500 then 600 then 700 miles/day through pretty good weather to get here. It was sure nice to sleep comfortably inside our vehicles for free overnight at highway rest areas along the way. Last night and tonight we enjoy Robert's air conditioned hospitality and comfy indoor beds.

On our 'rest day' today we slept in and bought fresh things that go in our little fridges. We're taking it easy in order to time the park entry at the most favorable time of day, and be fully refreshed.

Tomorrow (Friday) it's a 4-hour drive to the park entrance, then three hours for the last 30 miles over unpaved rutted unmaintained roads and arroyos to reach our campsite. We'll arrange a basic campsite in the afternoon heat on Friday, then get to the hard work of setting up the serious radio stations early Saturday morning in the cool desert before everything bakes from noon onward.
