I just finished a four-day rove to the water grid of CN78xb, camping on top of a mountain on the Olympic Peninsula. It’s only 90 miles from home as the crow flies, but a five-hour drive including a giant car ferry across Puget Sound. The Washington State Ferry system operates 22 terminals in the area and is a branch of our state highway department.
CN78 is high on the most-wanted list at 25.5% needing it, or 52 of the leaders iirc. I made 188 contacts across the western US. This trip should have a big effect on the leaderboard and I can’t wait to see the updates.
We had a one-hour opening to Houston, and two openings to Arizona. (No fair, why they get so much?) My goal was to reach Alan N5NA halfway between those spots. Although I worked Alan’s neighbor Robert W5AJ (FFMA #57) we did not complete with Alan.
This trip was in every way the opposite of N7PHY and my brutal desert expedition to DL88 in Big Bend NP this May. After all, this was at altitude among dense green trees in a temperate rain forest. One day, it was raining steadily under the trees from saturated water vapor in the clouds moving through, even though it wasn’t raining in the open areas. Although it’s July, it was chilly and I turned on the room heater some mornings.
