I wanted to share with you a letter from the National Library of Israel's CEO, Oren Weinberg, who gives an account of the early morning work at the Library as he and the Library's board chair, Sallai Meridor, joined the staff in protecting the sacred texts of our civilization during the onset of the strikes in Iran.
Dear Friends,
These last 12 hours have been historic.
I want to bring you a firsthand report as to what transpired at the National Library of Israel in the early morning hours today in Israel.
At 3:30am, following the IDF Homefront Command’s country-wide siren announcing the IDF strikes, Sallai and I, together with the security, conservation, and logistics teams, arrived at the Library to dismantle the treasures housed in the William Davidson and Helen Diller galleries. With careful and coordinated action, we removed the books, manuscripts, musical scores, archives, and more. Within a few hours, these priceless treasures were relocated deep underground into climate-controlled spaces in our special collection vaults. This all happened a couple of hours before we received the news that some 100 Iranian drones had been launched toward Israel.
Just as our hearts and concerns are with the people of Israel who are busy preparing for the uncertainty of the coming days, this event reminds us of the meaning of having a physical facility for safeguarding precious items like these, from Rambam to Hannah Senesh, from the Shem Tov Bible to the famed Bunting Clover map and 9th century Koran, which somehow survived hundreds of years of exile, pogroms, Shoah, and geopolitical chaos. These books, manuscripts, and other vessels of Jewish and world heritage are kept safe and secure in the National Library of Israel so that you and we can access and engage with these invaluable resources for generations to come.
I am deeply aware of how fraught these days will be for you, our partners and friends around the world. I’m sending gratitude and wishes for better days ahead.
