Locating Living Relatives and Making Contact
Presented in Hebrew by Efrat Shimoni-Susser
The "Holy Grail" of many genealogists is locating relatives. Sometimes these are relatives who were known but whose contact was severed, and sometimes, as part of the research, distant relatives are discovered. This process has three parts - the jump from old
documents to new relatives, locating details about those relatives, and finally - making the contact. In each of the stages, there are challenges and solutions that are not always part of classical genealogy, which will be presented in the lecture, alongside
examples and exciting stories. The lecture will reveal a variety of tools and sources that make it possible to locate information about the war years, and especially about the stages of survival of Holocaust survivors.
Efrat Shimoni‑Susser has many years of experience in genealogical family research and in locating information from the Holocaust period. What began with her mother’s request to help search for the
remnants of her family after the Holocaust developed into volunteer work and later into expertise. Today she lectures and teaches in professional courses for genealogists, and her services are sought after by private clients, institutions, and for locating
heirs for the courts. She also prepares expert opinions for legal proceedings.
