Hello early music lovers
Except for a few names like Villa-Lobos and Jobim, not much is heard about the music of Brazil. Especially ignored is the colonial music, for the fact that only fairly recently it is being edited, published, made available to performers.
Our Brazilian conductor Myrna Herzog joins Brazil's celebrations of 200 years of independence, and thanks to the support of the Brazilian embassy in Israel, brings us a fascinating program of Brazilian music of the early 19th century. The Emperor composerNot many people know that the guy who proclaimed Brazil's Independence (in 1822!), Pedro de Alcântara or else Pedro I the Emperor, was also a man of culture, and a gifted composer who played 12 instruments. Our program, Brazil: the Monarch Composer includes the powerful Credo composed by the Emperor, together with a Pastoral Mass for Christmas by José Maurício Nunes Garcia (the greatest Brazilian colonial composer), a delightful orchestral overture by Marcos Portugal, and a popular dance which is at the root of the samba: lundu!
