This report documents the challenges associated with not paying workers in the homeless response sector a living wage. It highlights the potential impacts of higher pay for these workers, such as improved productivity, morale, and retention, which could, in turn, improve the quality and continuity of client care.

Rising costs of living are a top concern across the country. This is particularly important for organizations that seek to support vulnerable populations. This report explores what constitutes a living wage in Los Angeles County and the barriers preventing workers in the homeless response sector from receiving such a wage. The authors examined what a living wage is in Los Angeles County using fair market rents for various unit sizes and several family configurations. They then collected data on wages listed in job postings within Los Angeles County for frontline and management occupations in the homeless response sector to assess earning potential. They find that workers at nonprofit organizations, particularly frontline staff, often do not earn a living wage, which contributes to the financial, emotional, and health burdens that these workers face. This is likely to affect employee productivity and retention as well as the quality and continuity of client care.

Design, setting, participants, & measurements: We sought consensus on key terms and process and outcome indicators that can be used to measure how efficiently a transplant center evaluates persons interested in becoming a living kidney donor. Using a RAND-modified Delphi method, 77 participants (kidney transplant recipients or recipient candidates, living kidney donors or donor candidates, health care providers, and health care administrators) completed an online survey to define the terms and indicators. The definitions were then further refined during an in-person meeting with ten stakeholders.

Results: We identified 16 process indicators (e.g., average time to evaluate a donor candidate), eight outcome indicators (e.g., annual number of preemptive living kidney donor transplants), and two measures that can be considered both process and outcome indicators (e.g., average number of times a candidate visited the transplant center for the evaluation). Transplant centers wishing to implement this set of indicators will require 22 unique data elements, all of which are either readily available or easily collected prospectively.

Conclusions: We identified a set of indicators through a consensus-based approach that may be used to monitor and improve the performance of a transplant center in how efficiently it evaluates persons interested in becoming a living kidney donor.

well there is zero precedent for anyone living 1,000 years so there is no reason to believe they would. Avi's had visions much closer in the future though and both should have been alive then unless they died a violent death. So they could just be visions of a future where both stepped aside from directing human affairs while still alive. Perhaps a warning to Avi that she couldn't do that. Isn't the most common interpretation that she already voided the reality of those visions by insisting the Aeil be included in the Dragon's Peace though?

Well, it seems pretty clear Rand has no interest in holding any position of power or influence again; it's said straight out about him wanting to see the world, not just palaces. So I'd imagine he wanders and travels, living among the common people doing odd jobs, helping re-build towns and re-plant farms, playing the flute at inns. That'd have a nice parallel with his early journey out of the Two Rivers.

Rand Hall, nestled into the north face of Manitou Heights, houses 243 upper-class men and women. A variety of living options are available in Rand including single, double, and quad occupancy rooms. Suites share their own bathrooms. The hillside location offers a beautiful view of the woods and fields surrounding the college.

An embryo has no rights. Rights do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born. The living take precedence over the not yet living (or the unborn).

Neither can one, without grave injustice, consider Divine Providence to be responsible for what depends, instead, on a lack of wisdom in government, on an insufficient sense of social justice, on selfish monopolization or again on blameworthy indolence in confronting the efforts and the sacrifices necessary to insure the raising of living standards of a people and of all its sons. After several stops in western European cities, Rand arrived in New York City in February 1926. From New York, she traveled on to Chicago, Illinois, where she spent the next six months living with relatives, learning English, and developing ideas for stories and movies. She had decided to become a screenwriter, and, having received an extension to her visa, she left for Hollywood, California.

"We the living" is Rand's first novel, describing the life in post-revolution Soviet Union in a semi-autobiographic manner. In Rand's own words - "The plot is invented, the background is not... The specific events of Kira's life were not mine; her ideas, her convictions, her values, were and are."

Since I've already read all Rand's other novels, I can clearly feel that when she wrote this one, her ideas weren't fully formed yet. Thus this book is weaker than Atlas Shrugged, for instance. But it's still very worth a read, at least for its historic value. I also didn't like her view on relationships, which is clearly displayed in Kira's love life. I guess that Rand's protagonists are problematic from the romantic point of view in all her novels, but I somehow assumed it was just caused by her author's own life experience. However, as she wrote "We the living" in a young age, I tend to believe that the effect is actually the cause - it can be that Rand's untraditional views on relationships - the ones reflected in her novels - impeded her own success in real life.

A $2 million grant from The Heinz Endowments will help RAND identify and address critical issues that affect veterans living in Pittsburgh, throughout Pennsylvania, and across the United States. The grant from the Pittsburgh-based foundation, directed to the RAND Epstein Family Veterans Policy Research Institute, will fund research, analysis, and outreach to improve federal support for veterans.

Related to Mexico's increase in the number of older people are changes in disease patterns. Because people are living longer, chronic and degenerative diseases and disability are far more prevalent than in previous decades. In 1990, noncommunicable diseases caused 57.8 percent of deaths; this figure increased to 73.8 percent in 2004.

Older people with health insurance are more likely to find their health to be excellent, very good, or good (43.8 percent among the insured vs. 32.8 percent among the uninsured) and are less prone to having strokes (2.2 vs. 3.0 percent), arthritis (17.2 vs. 23.1 percent), and limitations with activities of daily living (4.9 vs. 9.4 percent). However, they are more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes (17.8 vs. 13.0 percent) and to be obese (20.0 vs. 12.5 percent). About 37 percent of older Mexicans report having hypertension.

Hardcore objectivists often criticize liberals for basing decisions on emotion, rather than reason. My father saw our family politics no differently. In his mind, it was reasonable to ask that I emancipate myself and work for a living. To me, it felt like he was asking me to sacrifice my childhood so he didn't have to pay child support. To me, it felt like abandonment.
