The Faculty of Philosophy at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University will host several visiting positions for the semester March 2023-August 2023. Applications are welcome from both senior and junior faculty (including those holding non-tenured posts and post-docs) from foreign institutions, but we will only be able to consider candidates in possession of a Ph.D. by the time of the application.

The Faculty offers two different types of positions, depending on the stage of career of the applicant: visiting professor and visiting fellow, which can last between 1 and 6 months. Deadline for applications is October 1st, 2022. We expect to inform applicants about the status of their applications by the beginning of November. The expected start of the visiting period is March 1st, 2023.

These fellowships are not salaried. For the a.y. 2022-23, research activities will take place both in person and remotely. Up to two positions can be reserved to in-person visiting scholars, whereas the other positions will be reserved to online visiting scholars. The Faculty will provide access to the seminars, lectures and congresses of the Faculty for all visiting members.

All visiting scholars are expected to undertake research collaborations with one or more Faculty members. In addition, visiting professors are expected to undertake a small amount of didactic activity, in the form of guest lectures, seminar activities, or the like, upon agreement with the host Faculty members.

Research at the Faculty of Philosophy at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University revolves around six areas, listed below. The candidate will be expected to apply by mentioning one or more of those areas, how they intend to collaborate in that area, whether they are applying for a visiting professorship or a visiting fellowship, whether they are applying for an online visit or an in-person visit, and the duration of their visit.


Applications should include:

•   A short description (no more than one page) of the research you intend to undertake whilst at the Faculty of Philosophy, with specific mention of connections to one or more of the areas of research at the Faculty (see list below), which also specifies: the duration of their visit, whether they are applying for an online or an in-person visit, whether they are applying for a visiting professorship or a visiting fellowship.

•   A short CV (no more than two pages).

Notification of acceptance/rejection: November 1st, 2022
Start of the visiting period: March 1st, 2022

AREAS OF RESEARCH

Research in Philosophy of Science and Applied Epistemology focuses on experimental and applied epistemology, philosophy of science, experimental economics, and behavioral science and its applications, as well as the study of language, memory and reasoning. Research center: CRESA Research Center for Applied and Experimental Epistemology and Philosophy of Science. CRESA welcomes visitors interested in the center’s current research topics: the epistemology of trust, the science of disinformation, behavioral interventions for public policy, and medical decision making. We welcome researchers interested in both theoretical and applied research. CRESA is currently hosting the H2020 project Policy, Expertise and Trust, and the PRIN project From Models to Decisions.

Research in Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics revolves around issues in the foundations of mathematics, abstractionism and Frege’s philosophy of mathematics, the application of non-classical logics to set theoretic paradoxes, philosophical logic and philosophy of logic, the semantics of arbitrary reference. Research center: CRESA Research Center for Applied and Experimental Epistemology and Philosophy of Science.

Research in Philosophy of Mind involves, but is not limited to, themes with a focus on cognitive phenomenology, intentionality of perception and the perception of evaluative and high-level properties. Research in Philosophy of Language focuses on the social and applied philosophy of language investigating expressive and evaluative discourse, speech acts and discursive injustice, oppressive speech, language and gender, experimental approaches to evaluative, expressive and moral language. Research centers: CRESA Research Center for Applied and Experimental Epistemology and Philosophy of Science; GENDER Interfaculty Centre for Gender Studies. CRESA is currently hosting the PRIN project The Mark of the Mental.

Research in History of Philosophy, History of Ideas and Patristic Studies includes both theoretical and historical issues: history of philosophy in late antiquity, early Christian and patristic studies, medieval and early modern philosophy, contemporary philosophy and history of ideas. Research centers: CRISI Center for Interdisciplinary Research in History of Ideas; ICONE European Research Center in History and Theory of the Image; GENESIS Center for Patristic Studies.

Research in Ethics and Politics revolves around both theoretical and applied issues in particular concerning critical theory, ethical theory, metaethics, neuroethics, bioethics, environmental and media ethics, social and political philosophy and public ethics. Research centers: CeSEP Centre for Studies in Ethics and Politics; IRCECP International Research Center for European Culture and Politics. CeSEP is currently hosting the PRIN project New challenges for applied ethics. The moral impact of scientific and technological advances.

Research in Phenomenology and Theoretical Philosophy focuses on phenomenology, social ontology, philosophy of personhood, philosophy of mind, eidetics, hermeneutics, metaphysics, aesthetics, philosophy of arts, political theology and philosophy of history. Areas of expertise include phenomenology of experience, existential phenomenology, phenomenology of medicine, phenomenology of value-qualities, value-perception and expressiveness, qualitative social ontology, empathy and phenomenology of intersubjectivity, personal identity and gender, neuro-phenomenology, genealogy and archeology of knowledge, theory of visual arts, hermeneutics of concepts, philosophy of literature, Italian thought, Jewish thought. Research centers: PERSONA Centre for Research in Phenomenology and Sciences of the Person; DIAPOREIN Centre of Research in Metaphysics and Philosophy of Arts.
