Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to circulate our call for the 2022 Belfer Fellowship at the ADL Center for Technology & Society. The deadline has been extended to July 22, 2022. Please share widely!

The ADL Center for Technology and Society (CTS) is opening a call for proposals for our fifth class of Belfer Fellows. Fellows will receive up to $50,000 in funding and additional research support for one year, with the possibility of renewal contingent on demonstrated progress. Investigators from all fields of research with a distinguished body of work are invited to submit projects. Each fellowship will conclude with a public-facing written report, produced in collaboration with CTS.

Applications are due by July 22nd and can be submitted via this online form.

This year’s fellowship seeks proposals studying one or more of the following areas as they intersect with online hate and harassment and making digital environments welcoming and inclusive spaces for all:

  • Disinformation, hate & democracy
  • Non-English content moderation and/or disinformation
  • Algorithmic amplification of extremism & hate
  • Online gaming
  • Supporting targets of online hate & harassment

Previous Belfer Fellows have published high-impact reports, received national press coverage andpublished op-eds, led workshops on their work and appeared at leading conferences, and had their findings cited in Congressional hearings on social media. Alumni have included professors, legal scholars, prominent journalists, and researchers from various domains of technology. Current fellows are tracking disinformation in political advertising on Facebook (including in English and in Spanish), evaluating the effectiveness of deplatforming extremists, and researching experiences of toxicity in online games among youth, including among targets, bystanders, and perpetrators.

The application consists of the completed form, including 200 word project description/abstract, short application questions, 1000-2000 word project proposal, timeline, contact information for two references, and CV/resume. Candidates invited for interviews will be asked for a sample of work, proposed budget, and two letters of reference.

CTS welcomes questions and inquiries about the fellowship program. Please contact c...@adl.org.
