Funded PhD opportunity at Université Laval on topics related to deafness, cochlear implants, sensory development, neurotechnologies
Position: I am seeking a highly motivated graduate student to complete a PhD in anthropology, working on a topic related to a broader, interdisciplinary project on the experiences of deaf people who use cochlear implants (CIs). The position will be based in the Department of Anthropology at Université Laval, a francophone university in Quebec City.
The research will contribute to a multi-year CIHR-funded project led by Stephanie Lloyd (Université Laval) alongside international collaborators (Australia, United States) who aim to:
[1] Document people’s experiences with CIs,
[2] Identify what is currently measured, or not, about these experiences in clinical and research spaces,
[3] Catalogue what people with CIs want to be known, made perceptible, and taken into account about their experiences (e.g. sensory experiences, communication styles, personal or professional issues), and
[4] Mobilize interdisciplinary expertise to work across data sets (e.g. experiential accounts, audiological files, neurophysiological measures) to understand experiences of CIs differently.
The student will benefit from collaborative activities with the team and be invited to pursue their own research interests, developing a project that fits within the overarching project themes.
Funding: The successful applicant will receive $24 000/year (4 years), plus research expenses. The Faculty of Graduate Studies at Université Laval also offers up to $16 000 in merit-based funding, based on the timely advancement of studies. The student will be encouraged to pursue additional sources of funding, including government scholarships and those at Université Laval.
Collaborations and output: The research will form the basis of the student’s dissertation. As key members of the project team, the PhD student will have opportunities to collaborate with other researchers, present their work in seminars/workshops, and publish. The student will be trained in project management, methods, analysis, and knowledge mobilization.
How to apply: Applicants should email (stephan...@ant.ulaval.ca) a CV, a brief letter describing interests and fit with the project, details on current/past interests (1 page max.), how they foresee their research contributing to the project overall (1 page max. sketch of a possible research direction), and the names of two academic references. Students should have training in anthropology, preferably with expertise in science and technology studies and critical disability studies. Both English and French are important for the position (details can be discussed). The start of studies would be in fall 2026.
Deadline: Applicants to are strongly encouraged to submit application materials by 15 December 2025. Later applications will be considered if the position remains unfilled.
