13th JCU Posthuman Studies Workshop

Call for Papers: Aesthetics of Cyborgs, Robots, and the Posthuman: Reflections from Ancient Greece and Rome to the Present Day, 13th JCU Posthuman Studies Workshop

Conference Date: 15th of February 2025

Location: Aula Magna, John Cabot University

Submission Deadline: 15th of December 2024.

Organizer: Prof. Stefan Lorenz Sorgner: www.sorgner.de

Overview:

As technology continues to reshape the human experience, the aesthetic dimensions of cyborgs, robots, and the posthuman have become increasingly significant. These evolving forms challenge our traditional notions of beauty, form, and artistic expression. This conference seeks to explore the aesthetics of cyborgs, robots, and the posthuman, drawing on the rich artistic and philosophical heritage of Ancient Greece and Rome and examining how these ideas resonate and transform in our contemporary context.

We invite scholars, artists, and researchers to engage in a multidisciplinary dialogue that bridges ancient and modern perspectives, exploring how aesthetics is informed by the technological evolution from the classical past to the present and beyond.

Suggested Topics:

Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

1.            Classical Foundations of Aesthetic Theory:

The influence of Ancient Greek and Roman concepts of beauty and proportion on modern representations of cyborgs and robots.

Artistic depictions of mythological figures like the Golem, Talos, and other artificial beings in classical antiquity.

The role of sculpture, architecture, and visual arts in shaping early notions of the ideal body and how these notions evolve in the age of the posthuman.

2.            Evolution of the Aesthetic Ideal:

Comparisons between classical ideals of beauty and posthuman aesthetics.

The impact of Renaissance rediscoveries of classical art on contemporary depictions of cyborgs and robots.

How classical art informs the design and conceptualization of posthuman forms in modern media and technology.

3.            Aesthetic Representations in Modern and Contemporary Culture:

The portrayal of cyborgs and robots in film, literature, and visual arts: from classical influences to futuristic visions.

The aesthetics of post- and transhumanism and the blending of organic and artificial forms.

How contemporary artists draw on classical motifs to explore themes of technology, identity, and the posthuman.

4.            Interdisciplinary Approaches:

Contributions from art history, philosophy, cultural studies, and media studies on the aesthetics of cyborgs, robots, and the posthuman.

The intersection of aesthetics with ethics, particularly in the context of designing posthuman bodies and environments.

The role of digital and virtual technologies in reshaping classical aesthetics for the posthuman era.

5.            Case Studies and Artistic Practice:

Analysis of specific artworks, performances, or media that engage with the aesthetics of the cyborg, robot, or posthuman.

Artistic responses to the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies.

Exhibitions, installations, and performances that explore the blending of classical and futuristic aesthetics.
