Next 'Unearthing Petromodernity' Seminar (6 July) [Announcement]
Dear all,
This is a reminder that the next session of the online seminar Unearthing Petromodernity: Oil Studies in the Anthropocene will take place today on Monday 6 July, at 1pm Lisbon time / 2pm Central European Time.
We will meet at this link:
https://meet.google.com/nwx-tput-xmg
As planned, the reading for this session will be:
Di Muzio, T. & Dow, M. — “Global Capitalism and Oil” (2022)
In Handbook on Oil and International Relations (pp. 317–335) Focus: Oil in international relations, financialization and the structure of global capitalism.
The reading is available at this link:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/65x7150x7ydiwl4vnh8sc/Reading-July-6-Global-Capitalism-and-Oil.pdf?rlkey=abbnwietu5jlo06dxuuei7xcy&st=71pwzmai&dl=0
We will discuss how Di Muzio and Dow use the capital-as-power framework to rethink oil as a central condition of capitalist order. The seminar will also consider what this perspective implies for ongoing debates on energy transition: can decarbonisation take place within current social frameworks, or does it necessarily require confronting the deeper logics of capital accumulation?
Ricardo Noronha, Davide Scarso and me will coordinate the session, which will start with a rather brief presentation of the text (no more than 20 minutes), before opening the floor to discussion.
Please don't hesitate to write to me, Davide or Ricardo if you have any queries.
Looking forward to seeing you all.
Best wishes,
Amedeo, Ricardo and Davide
