Dear professors,

I recently came across your recent publication on the topic of inner areas and would like to congratulate you on the quality of your work.

This provides an excellent opportunity to invite you to consider contributing to the special session I am organizing on this subject within the NMP 2026 international conference (www.nmp.unirc.it). I would be delighted if you could present a paper for the Springer proceedings (6–10 pages following their formatting guidelines) and join the conference sessions at the end of May.

All relevant information is available on the conference website and in the track description attached. Should you have any questions or require further details, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you once again.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Valentina

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Traditionally labelled as lagging-behind territories, inner areas are today among the most subsidised regions by European funding initiatives — including resources from the PNRR — and are governed through long-term strategies with periodic national and regional updates. Yet, their narrative remains divided. On the one hand, statistical evidence often points to an inevitable trajectory of decline; on the other, emerging signals of resilience suggest alternative scenarios. The interpretation of these trends is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of public policies targeting such territories.

Against this backdrop, the session aims to investigate the specific features and dynamics of the territorial economies of inner areas, focusing on both their vulnerabilities and their adaptive capacities, considering the new planning phase and the concluding cycle of the 2021–2027 programming period and the PNRR. Particular attention will be devoted to the underexplored determinants of regional economic resilience, including the potential role of place branding, social innovation, artificial intelligence, and targeted economic projects designed to leverage a territory’s unique assets — such as natural resources, cultural amenities, and specialised products.

I invite contributions that address, but are not limited to:

·        Determinants of Territorial disparities and adaptive capacities in inner areas

·        Drivers of economic resilience in these territories

·        Policy evaluation: effectiveness and limits of public interventions (including PNRR and EU funds) in these territories

·        Comparative analyses across European regions

·        Case studies on resistance, resilience, or transformation
