Dear All,

We are pleased to announce an upcoming intensive course on astrolabes and invite expressions of interest from prospective participants. The course will feature hands-on workshops led by Taha Yasin Arslan (Istanbul Medeniyet University) and Silke Ackermann (History of Science Museum, Oxford).

The primary objective of the course is to develop a strong understanding of the astronomically significant components of the astrolabe. Participants will explore historical construction techniques and learn how the curves and lines of an astrolabe are derived from the principles of stereographic projection. Through practical sessions, attendees will apply these principles to design and draw their own astrolabes on paper using callipers, compasses, and other traditional tools. In addition, special demonstration sessions will offer participants the opportunity to practise using an astrolabe first-hand with expert guidance and physical replicas constructed by Arslan himself.

The course is planned as a five-day intensive programme, combining both theoretical and practical aspects of astrolabe-making. The proposed dates are 13–17 April 2026, subject to adjustment depending on interest and demand.

The course will take place at the Institute for the History of Science, Istanbul Medeniyet University, Istanbul, Türkiye. The venue is the Semaniyye Madrasa, a 15th-century school located in the historic heart of Istanbul and the new home of the Institute.

Those wishing to obtain further information are encouraged to contact both Taha Yasin Arslan at tahayas...@gmail.com and Silke Ackermann at silke.a...@hsm.ox.ac.uk

Kind regards.
