The Department of Philosophy and Education at the University of Turin, Italy, is searching for candidates for a position of Ricercatore a tempo determinato, tipo B (= tenure-track Assistant Professor). The tenure clock is three years. Afterwards, the position is transformed in an Associate Professor position.

AOC: Logic, Philosophy of Science

Deadline: 9 July 2023, 24:00 Italian time (UTC+2)

Research Profile

Applicants must possess a PhD and have postdoctoral research experience. They should pursue an original and innovative research program and have an excellent track record of publications. In particular, we expect the candidate to be able to teach logic at any level and to have strong research credentials in history and/or philosophy of logic. Connections with philosophy of language, epistemology, and philosophy of science are welcome.

The successful candidate is expected to apply for competitive external funding at the local, national and international level.

The position formally falls within the Italian macro-sector (“settore concorsuale”) 11/C2 (logic, history and philosophy of science), and the Italian micro-sector (“settore scientifico-disciplinare”) M-FIL/02 (logic and philosophy of science).

Teaching and Admin

The successful candidate will teach 90 hours per year in class. Since one course amounts to 36 hours in class, this amounts to 2,5 courses distributed over the academic year. The teaching in Turin is structured into four blocks of six weeks (plus exam weeks); each course is usually assigned to a single block. Teaching is in Italian at BA level and in both Italian and English at the MA level.

The candidate should be prepared for teaching courses in logic, history of logic and possibly other areas of history and philosophy of science. In addition, the candidate is expected to hold weekly office hours, to supervise BA and MA students, and to participate in thesis committees, departmental meetings, etc.

University, Department and Research Center

The University of Turin is one of Italy’s oldest and scientifically most reputed academic institutions, and Philosophy is definitely one of the areas in which it is particularly strong. Philosophical research in Turin is consistently regarded as satisfying the highest international standards, e.g., the QS survey 2023 places it at #45 in the world and #1 in Italy.

The successful candidate will be affiliated to the Department of Philosophy and Education (DFE) and the Center for Logic, Language and Cognition (LLC). The Department has recently been one of only two Departments of Excellence in philosophy in Italy, with a strong profile in both historical and systematic areas. Currently, the LLC hosts two PRIN projects (major national research grants) in logic and philosophy of science,, and is part of the PLEXUS international research network on substructural logics (https://plexuslogic.wordpress.com/).

LLC holds weekly seminars, reading groups and webinars featuring well-known speakers in analytically oriented philosophy and related scientific fields. In addition, there are plenty of research activities by more specialized research groups. See the LLC website https://www.llc.unito.it/ for more information.

Tenure Procedure and the Habilitation (“Abilitazione scientifica nazionale”, ASN)

By Italian Law, universities are obliged to create an Associate Professor position for any Assistant Professor (Rtd-B) who has obtained the national habilitation (ASN).  It is awarded by a national expert committee on the basis of a candidate’s publication record. In particular, candidates need not compile a dedicated monograph.

In the relevant sector (11/C2: logic, history and philosophy of science), the candidate must satisfy at least two of the following three publication criteria to be eligible for the ASN: (a) a monograph, which can also be a textbook; (b) at least ten published research articles (including minor journals and edited collections); (c) at least three articles published in group A journals (“riviste fascia A”), as classified by the Italian Ministry for Universities and Research.

There are various moments in the year when a candidate can submit. Candidates for this position are not expected to possess the ASN already; however, they are encouraged to pursue it in order to qualify for tenure.

The Italian Language

Candidates are not yet required to speak Italian, but need to master it within 1-2 years since the BA level teaching is fully in Italian. It is also recommended for daily interactions inside and outside the university. The University supports their employees in the learning process.

Salary and Living in Italy

The starting gross salary of an Assistant Professor (Rtd-B) is about 35.000 euros. Since Italy has universal healthcare, the employee need not pay for health insurance. Finally, Turin is a very affordable city with low house prices, and has a tremendous lot to offer from the point of view of culture, nature and lifestyle (https://www.turismotorino.org/en).
