Job description

 

The post-doctoral fellow will be associated with the research project "The Common Notion. Science and Consensus in the Seventeenth Century" (NOTCOM, ERC AdG 2023-2027) and employed on French contract with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). NOTCOM is a European project of the Horizon Europe framework programme that explores the social epistemology and the methods and practices of collective science in early-modern natural philosophy. Activities

 

The post-doctoral fellow will work alongside the principal investigator and the project team on completing the research objectives of NOTCOM. They will pursue a personal research project within the remit of NOTCOM, but are also expected to contribute to the organisation of research events, participate in team meetings, collaborate with associated research partners in Lyon, Oxford, and elsewhere, and contribute to the preparation of an edited volume. They will moreover be assigned specific data packages to contribute to the construction of a project database.

 

Competences

 

Applicants holding a doctorate in the history of early-modern philosophy, history or science, or sociology of science are particularly encouraged to submit. Please note that the post-doc must have the ability to work effectively in both English and French. The ability to read texts in Latin and/or German and Italian is an advantage.

 

Work Context

 

NOTCOM is administratively split between two units of CNRS: The Maison Française d'Oxford (MFO) and the research centre IHRIM at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS de Lyon). The post-doctoral fellow will be employed at the MFO but will also spend a total of about 4-6 weeks per annum in Lyon or elsewhere in France, distributed over the academic year according to a coordinated team calendar. The mobility is funded by the project. The post-doctoral fellow will moreover be afforded a budget for conference travel.

 

Constraints and risks

 

The position is open exclusively to current UK residents with work permits. Candidates must hold a valid passport allowing for frequent travel between France and the United Kingdom.

Missions

 

Le post-doctorant sera associé au projet de recherche "La notion commune. Science et consensus au XVIIe siècle" (NOTCOM, ERC AdG 2023-2027) et employé par le CNRS sur un contrat français. NOTCOM est un projet européen du programme cadre Horizon Europe qui a pour but d'explorer l'épistémologie sociale et les méthodes et pratiques de la science collective dans la philosophie naturelle du XVIIe siècle. Activités

 

Le post-doctorant travaillera sur l'exploration des thématiques de NOTCOM aux côtés du coordinateur scientifique du projet et de l'équipe scientifique. Il poursuivra un programme de recherche personnel sur des thématiques relevant du projet NOTCOM. Il contribuera en outre à l'organisation des événements, participera aux réunions de l'équipe, contribuera à l'édition d'un ouvrage collectif et collaborera avec les partenaires scientifiques du projet à Lyon, à Oxford et ailleurs. Enfin des tâches spécifiques lui seront assignées en vue de la construction d'une base de données.

 

Compétences

 

Les candidats ayant un doctorat en histoire de la philosophie moderne, histoire des sciences, ou sociologie des sciences sont particulièrement encouragés à postuler. Le post-doctorant doit être capable de travailler en anglais comme en français. La capacité à lire en latin et/ou allemand et/ou italien est un avantage.

 

Contexte de travail

 

Le projet NOTCOM est administrativement partagé entre deux unités CNRS : IHRIM (UMR 5317) à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon et la Maison Française d'Oxford (MFO UMIFRE 11, Oxford). Le post-doctorant sera employé à la MFO mais devra également passer 4 à 6 semaines par an à Lyon ou ailleurs en France, réparties selon un calendrier d'équipe coordonné. La mobilité sera financée par le projet. Un budget pour financer la participation à des colloques sera mis à disposition.

 

Contraintes et risques

 

Candidats de toute nationalité sont invités à postuler mais doivent actuellement résider au Royaume-Uni et avoir le droit d'y travailler. Le candidat doit être en possession d'un passeport à jour permettant de faire voyages fréquents entre la France et l'Angleterre sans demander un visa.
