Announcement of an Assistant Professor position in Theoretical Philosophy with focus on the Philosophy of Science

at the Department of Philosophy , Stockholm University.

Closing date: 3 May 2021.

The Department of Philosophy at Stockholm University is Sweden’s largest philosophy department. The department is home to a very active, friendly, and cooperative community of internationally well-connected researchers, and hosts a large variety of conferences, workshops, colloquia, seminars, and guest researchers every year. Like most major philosophy departments in Sweden, the Stockholm department is divided into two subjects — Practical and Theoretical Philosophy — both of which feature many researchers prominent in their fields. Theoretical Philosophy encompasses philosophy of language, logic, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and the history of philosophy.

Subject/subject description
Assistant Professor in Theoretical Philosophy with focus on the Philosophy of Science

Main responsibilities
Job responsibilities include research, teaching and supervision in theoretical philosophy with a particular focus on the philosophy of science. Teaching will include, apart from any specific topics selected by the appointee, the general philosophy of science and the philosophy of social sciences and humanities. The appointee will actively seek external research funding and may take over some administrative tasks.

Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for employment as an Assistant Professor, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching skills, and has obtained a doctoral degree five years or less before the application deadline. Applicants who invoke deductible time must state in their application reasons, period (stated with date), and extent percent if the deductible time during one or more periods does not amount to full time.

A general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people, as well as other general abilities required to perform one’s duties. No preference is given to candidates already competent in Swedish. However, sufficient competence within two years will be required, and the successful candidate will undertake to acquire such competence within the period.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special and equal emphasis will be given to scientific and pedagogical proficiency - especially with regard to the type of teaching mentioned above. Emphasis will also be given to administrative skills (including demonstrated leadership skills) and ability to interact with the surrounding community as well as the ability to inform about research and development work.

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 7,5 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage.
